Other things you can do is design routes to have an easy path back to town, like with ledges for example, so it's not too much of a pain to get back to town if necessary. The thing about Pokemon that's really frustrating is that very, very rarely do you have to go long without a Pokemon Center that fully heals you, so you don't have to worry about keeping your team healthy. But the worst part is PP. You so rarely have a chance to use up your PP so there's very little reason to strategize, which differs from SaGa, the game that inspired Pokemon. In that game healing was a lot more limited (and cost money) so your resources were a lot more precious, especially because weapons had permanently usable charges and could run out. Even classes that could regenerate uses had to be careful, because you need to be careful to use your weak 20 use weapon or else you won't have your 5 use fire spell.

I don't really know what the solution to this in the Pokemon games is though, short of charging for the Pokemon Center.'

Some of the paths are 2 tiles while some are 3 tiles? I suggest sticking to 2 tile for Gen 3 style tiles

Change the colors of the tiles so they at least don't look like the 94382847 other Gen 3 maps, def change the grass color, the mint green was always gross looking.

The empty line of tiles above the pokecenter/mart, remove it and move the buildings up 1 tile, there's too much empty space

Add some more smaller things in to fill in some of the space, like fences, light poles, benches.

The dock (?) is slightly too big with lots of empty space

Other than that, it's not a bad map, just needs some more adjusting.'

What I did for mine is integrate region lore. Basically, there's some big power flowing under the region and there are points where a bit of it is released into the surface, in those spots you can heal your pokemon if you interact with it.'

The path leading up to the thing in the top right is about 5 times longer than it should be.
From the map editor it looks like a fun additional afterthought to an otherwise succinct map
As a player it represent 20-30 seconds of nothingness
The building should be at the place where the road turns to the right
I am trying to help you with the game philosophy but if you don't expect anyone to play your game feel free to ignore this comment.
If you want to see an example of this sort of thing done correctly it would be Misty's town in RBY notice how compact the actual city is and if you /need/ to have a location that feels far away put it at the end of a route with pokemon, trainers, and mazes for the player to explore'
