Because the game released to a marketing black hole.
Every version except for the XB1X version ran terribly at launch 'cause they rawdogged the models in to a point it ran like garbage on anything but the newest cards, it stayed in the epic games blackhole for a year before releasing on steam but also got a bunch of patches that improved performance a little bit.

It's a pretty good ARPG performance issues with lods aside, it'll gain more appreciation as hardware catches up to it's giant models.

Yeah, Jack acting like an immature edgelord is almost pure comedy at first, but it makes a lot of sense once you learn that his entire memory was wiped and replaced with the directive to halt the spread of darkness and prevent the birth of Chaos. His single-mindedness and stubborn refusal to give a fuck about anyone else ends ends up making the "twist" a lot more meaningful, since it's contrasted with the pre-mindwipe flashbacks where he comes across as a much more responsible and emotionally mature person.'

>It ran pretty well for me, on PC.
Depends really on your hardware, resolution and when you played it.
It's a lot heavier on a GPU than it should be for the fidelity people say it looks like a PS3 game and I disagree but it was still taxing for the ROI. It was pretty bad at launch even on cards like the 2080 and stuttered when you'd do things like soul burst due to the models loading in, it also had terrible frame pacing issues so it never felt fluid.
The game post-steam launch & dlc runs a lot better than 1.0 did fwiw it also got DLSS that helped out and cleaned up the image nicely (lots of aliasing before)

I'll link to a benchmark from the time https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/stranger-of-paradise-final-fantasy-origin-pc-performance-analysis/
Look at the system requirements they'd released and you'll spy that 1080p recommended was a 1660 super.
Now consider that the 2080Ti or even 2080 weren't that long in the tooth when it launched, the 2080 being the top end of the line in late 2018 with the super refreshes in 2019, these are capable 1440p cards and the 3080 was current at the time with the 40 series still being 6 months away.
If you played this in 1080p with 30/40 series hardware or DLSS after patches it may not seem so bad but at 1440p or older cards that are still very capable it's a different story.

It'll definitely age well when graphics hardware catches up.
Going by PPW it should run alright on some of the 40 series cards and should be a very nice experience on 50 series NV cards later this year and the 60 series in a few more.
It's those fucking models man. What were they thinking.'

The storytelling is worse than FF8!

The story (and loop) opens with Jack, Jet, and Ashe on a boat - the pirate ship. Returning from a fight with some monster they've fought a bunch of times before.
Where did they go? Why did they fight? The game never tells you. The scene pans out revealing some dark energy build in the water, only to obscure it with a title scene. It's an abandoned plot thread or something.

It's a prequel story for FF1.
But there's no Matoya Cave. No Elfheim. No Vampires. No Dwarves. No Mermaids. No Earth Sage and Golem.
The Lufenians are basically disembodied voices. And the entire Lufenian continent is unused after 2...3? DLC packs?

Do they offer closure about the enigmatic Queen Jane that was mentioned in the original epilogue? No.

What do they do? They try to give us the 4 Fiend origin story, but not really. I like what they did with Astos. But his history is obscured as well.
I think, because this was made by another studio, they had a communication break down. Like, how comics book writers' have to get approval from Marvel or DC before they do anything big continuity-wise in a shared universe.

This is definitely a shared Universe. But I'm guessing nobody would sign off on the details concerning Lufenians.

It's like the Sonic Prime writes being told to include Shadow the Hedgehog in this universe, but they're not allow to confirm or acknowledge any of the continuity surrounding him.'

I think keeping the lore vague was intentional, because of the massive implications it has for FF1 as well as the FF franchise as a whole. Especially for a third-party game, going "well actually these OCs made all of the Final Fantasy worlds and now they use them as glorified garbage dumps" is already a bold move, but the more you build on that the heavier the implications are. Best to keep it loose and let the player form their own conclusions about what's actually going on than to confirm that either they made all of FF (awkward) or that the worlds are just facsimiles (pointless).

It's also not supposed to be a retread of FF1 to begin with, so there's no need to visit all the same locations and meeting all the same people. That would be something for a remake, not a prequel. Though I admit I would've liked to see the elves at least, it's weird to have Astos talk about elves and dark elves even though we never actually see any. Makes the claim of being king of the dark elves feel pointless.

So yeah it basically is just the backstory of the Four Fiends and an explanation for why the Warriors of Light are a thing, with everything else being either part of the explanation for why the story plays out the way it does, or a nostalgic reference to older games.'

Even the concept of "Strangers" is muddy.

Jack, Jet, Ashe, and Sophia are confirmed "strangers". Meaning they are from another dimension. At the very least - extradimensional, as is the case with Lufenians living outside their home dimension. All of their starting equipment has "Stranger" in the name.

Neon is supposed to be a native. So her equipment is named different. But it's hard to extrapolate anything from the text snippets on mission screens.

Jack and Jet are Lufenian. Jet is suppose to be a "commoner" for whatever that means in their culture.
It's like saying in a character bio that they are the top student in their class, but then you don't actually see the rest of the class. And their education and knowledge never become relevant to the plot.
So in the end you have a character that's just a name and a face.

Sophia and Ashe are "strangers", but never confirmed to be Lufenian. Which begs the question of what dimension they came from. The other dimensions being the other Final Fantasy Titles, including Dissidia.

Ashe is "high born". But there aren't that many black character in the FF Games, much less noble ones. Prospective dimensions could be 6 or 8. Or he could also be from 7's Midgar, "topside".'

MS kinda avoided that confusion thanks to their smart delivery system but yeah, I think that's a bit of it being cross gen and a bit of SE trying to release every game they had in a shippable state all in one year. The game isn't heavily optimised at all, it's clear they pushed it out the door as early as they could but also trying to overlap with their autumn/winter release window which was packed full of games.
They released a few patches in the first month but they were to change things like the wrong textures loading in and fixing lighting (series S/X had this disabled for example), like it took them 5 months to patch in DLSS.
Square-Enix really didn't wanna overspend on this game at all.'
