'The GBA remake of Shining Force added significantly more optional dialogue for every party member, an expanded plot that explains more details (unclear how much of it was just unable to fit in the original game's translation), some new chapters with some new characters, a LOT of balance changes, reworked placement of battle music so that some of the rarer songs are played more, ability to recruit some late-game secret characters much earlier and actually promote them, etc.

It's very good, the only tradeoff is really that it's easier than the original, but it has NG+, NG++ etc that gets harder every time you finish it...there's probably a hack somewhere that skips you right to NG+++ for an experience that feels more like the original or harder.'

Haven't played this one since forever. Which character do you mean? I recall Mawlock joining on battle 1 on NG+ (and really being the only reason you could win fights when the enemy stats became too ridiculous) but he's not a promoteable unit.'

The expanded plot (extra characters aside) was for the most part more faithful to the original script. The original translation took -a lot- of liberties. I remember reading somewhere they basically just winged it after getting a basic outline of the game's plot.'

It takes a lot of mechanics (including at least one notable oversight) and also the terrible maps from the original Gaiden, but much of the story is filled out and many character designs are radically different from the Famicom version. Unfortunately the new writing staff has a hardon for Alm and the story and Celica suffer for it a little bit.'
