Huh, wanted to make this exact thread today

Except I had in mind two developers. Well, three actually.

First one is Arcen. All of his games are super different and pretty unique, even if not always good. I really enjoyed Bionic Dues and The Last Federation. Ironically I still can't quite get into AI War, arguably the best one. And he's got a new AI domination thing coming, which hopefully will be good and successful.

The other is Cryptic Comet. Armageddon Empires is awesome and I'm super stoked on the remake of Solium Infernum. It's a bit unwieldy like Armello is, but anything beats Adobe Director.

The third are Holistic Design Inc and mostly it's about Emperor of the Fading Suns. Crazy ambitious game that still unfortunately hasn't been fully remade. Still, we should be happy to get it patched as much as it has been.'

Brutal Legend for me. Not the campaign though it's pretty fun but the multiplayer/RTS aspect of it.
3 super different factions: Ironheade, the human metalheads, is the most standard of them but still pretty cool and strong, has the only stealth unit in the game (which is strong against buildings), the most OP/allround useful super unit and bikini amazons on giant fire breathing cats; Drowning Doom, the Undead goths/emos, which has the weakest units in the game but also a bunch of debuffers to turn enemy even weaker than them, like the Brides (who are the cutest girls, by the way, despite being dried up ghost zombies in wedding dresses) who slow down the enemy's speed and attack rate, and a couple of possessors that allow the player to steal almost any unit in the game (including the super units) while the possessor lives; Tainted Coil, the evil bdsm demons, which builds troops a little slower than other factions but has special Hierarchy units, the spawners that quickly regenerate (and give small regeneration to non-vehicle units) when surrounded by the units which allow the player to build up his army anywhere on the field while other factions can only build theirs from the homebase.
The cool blend of 3rd person action and RTS: the player can and must not just direct his troops but also fight personally as the hero, all heroes have the same list of combos with different animations for them but each has his own unique list of solos (excluding the standard ones for directing the army, like creating a flag to which a newly spawned unit will move), QTE songs that serve as the player's spells and almost every non-hero unit can be interacted with to perform a double-team, which either makes the player dish out a lot of hurt while directing that unit personally or unlocks some special abilities like how the Ironheade healer car can stun the enemy units.
The only mode is 1 side v 1 side, but the number of players can be anywhere from 1v1 to 4v4.'

Yeah, that's what I am talking about, people do mention it quite often but only in terms of how they were disappointed by the bait-and-switch. When I played it myself I knew what I was in so I wasn't surprised or disappointed. Truth be told, I too didn't like the gameplay all too much in the first RTS missions, but it was mainly because I still didn't know how I was supposed to play it and the game did a bad job of explaining it to me. But after I did learn how to play I've got to say that the devs did a great job of making a solid RTS gameplay for a game that was made to be played with a controller.

My only real problems with the game is how fucked the multiplayer connection can be sometimes and the racing side missions. FUCK those. But otherwise the biggest problem is that I would like more of it, like the scrapped 4th faction and a longer campaign (but not the one in the drafts).'

I was going to say competition have nothing to do with lack of originality.
Technically, the strictest interpretation of competition is doing the same, better.

We can understand a studio continuing with their franchise because even if it wasn't for marketing and IP laws many player want/expect "more of the same, better".
But what player really want if they want more studio making game is something new, actually new, not a skin swap.'

quite a big one.
Remaster doesn't touch the original mechanically, just updates the existing or adds minor QOL improvements which aren't gamechangers. Think Serious Sam HD, Starcraft Remastered and so on.
Remake, as the name suggests, remakes the game from scratch, at least in theory. You get the same concept but you make it differently. Could very well be considered a sequel if it wasn't for fundamental story elements. Mostly a movie territory, but from recent games you had Dead Space, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy and so on. As for video games most I can think of would be fanmade imports of WC2 into WC3 or WC3 into SC2.'

'I've seen threads for Shadow Empires but not for Vic's other games. This is what my third try at Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa looks like. First two times failed for not understanding supply, FSBs and fuel. Probably going to retry for a fourth time because half of my tank divisions are at half integrity and some lost their halftracks which means they move at infantry pace. Also I didn't understand postures, fatigue and supply as much as I thought so their readiness is terrible and can't fight or move. My victory condition was Leningrad but was changed to Moscow by Hitler so it's going to be a long walk.

Overall I've found it very fun though very poorly explained like Shadow Empire is. The most interesting mechanic is you being the operational commander, Halder, and getting bonuses/maluses based on your relationships with everyone involved as well as the RNG nature of events and decisions. Sorry, I don't think anything was archived. Also it's not really "old lore", it happened a year or two ago if I remember correctly. QRD: he made a thread asking for recommendations of RPGs similar to Sacrifice. When discussion died out, he continued to bump his thread with concept art and excerpts from the manual until it reached bump limit. Then he kept creating new threads where he reposted other people's replies from previous threads, and gaslighted people who called him on it. Pretty surreal.'

Some dudes on Steam forums claim that the slow dice rolls can be fixed by Windows 7 or by installing free version of Adobe Director floating around the Internet. Neither (tried just compatibility mode for win7) worked for me in any noticeable way, whatever might have worked for others is probably just old software working in mysterious ways with different modern hardware combinations.
It is not that big of a deal luckily, it can be played windowed so the long seconds of rolling can be spent by clicking on websites.'

I know that a lot of RTS players despise turtling, but the fact is that it's fun to build up your defences and fight the enemy sending waves after waves. Is there any game for that?'

got pic related for like 2bux on GOG.
not a fan of pixel art, and i think this game's art is worse than average. also, it is proto woke, but i found it mostly tolerable.
i like the era/ genre, and was happy the game is fanciful instead of simulation.
the dice combat system grew on me, and i appreciated the short game loop.
definitely unique, original and not discussed here.'

CE is awesome. The sequel was a massive disappointment for me, the devs really misunderstood what was fun about the first game and doubled down on aspects that ended up making CE2 a slog to play.'

I love warzone2100- still have my physical copy.
Bought pic related for the unit design. Very granular, but excellent.
Nice weapon variety. And physics!
The maps are small. The campaign was boring.
Very unique and never discussed here.'

I too still have the physical copy.
It was good for the time.
That say, nowadays I would require more. Encouraging design for every environment.

Example: include climbing speed & different depth for water, amphibious frame that make boat.

Wheeled: extremely fast in desert, asphalt, slow in rocky soil, nearly dead in muddy-soil
Tracked vehicle: slower but best one in grassy/rocky soil, horrible in muddy-soil, good climber
Hover: Fastest over water & desert, bit slower over grassy soil, horrible in rocky soil, poor climber.
Legged: Average best, include shallow water, maybe even bonus against mines.
VTOL: would have different range/ammo based on the frame used.

And of course your campaign map would have those alternate route that reward creative design.'

Thanks for the thought,
but I looked at some wiki, it look like the typical specialized unit with upgrade with method of locomotion being mostly a matter of appearance.

Warzone 2100 design might have been 99% pointless design for 1% of actually useful unit, that's what should have built upon.

Shit now I'm reminded there's no good tactical vehicular games like Battlezone
Or better than Carrier Command Gaia (I just hate those instant laser weapons)'

Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown
Basically a remake of Defender of the Crown from Amiga.
The game has a storyline, every few turns there's some dialogue or event happening. I found that very refreshing compared to sandboxy games like Total War, where there's no story and characters are only pawns on the board with no personality. Also, voice acting is suprisingly good.
Aside from strategy, there are also action oriented segments: a bow shooting raid, swordfighting raid and jousting tournament. Though you quickly figure out that the first two, although fun, are a waste of a turn compared to capturing provinces or tournaments.
The game is pretty short. Sadly there's not much replayability, i wish they was some kind of higher difficulty setting or something.'

I see your point but it's not a blanket rule. I've played some old games as an adult for the first time and found them great. There is a lot devs used to do to make up for small disk space and low specs, some of their solutions were truly remarkable in creating a better experience than modern games that are 4,000x as large and use 100x more powerful specs.'
