I find it very amusing how video games were first created to realize and simulate abstract board game concepts like rectangles bumping into each other and dealing theoretical damage in integers that you have to write down on paper with a pen.
You'd have a dude with an axe visually take a swing at another enemy with a rigged skeleton animation, boom, video game.
And then modern gamedev goes and spends time and resources on creating abstract rectangles bumping into each other and dealing theoretical damage in integers. Then displays that number on the left side of the screen.
I guess it's nice the game is free, but it has 0 appeal and does nothing new or better than other titles in the strategy genre. I would honestly rather play Dune 2000 than abstract rectangles bumping into each other.
If this is made for warhammer autists, warhammer autists have a trillion tools and minis and mental disorders to play with. I'm pretty sure they'd rather play with their gay ass orks than rectangles with "ork" written on them'

You mean spreadsheets. Video games were created because some nerds were like "You see this oscilloscope, I'll bet I can make it look like it's playing sportsball". Lots of older games didn't even have much in the way of graphics, more like a text simulation of a typical board game or RPG, or some sort of management sim like what used to be popular on calculators. Nerd shit like tabletop games came later when home computers were powerful enough to be able to process the math and graphics in a timely manner and people were able to play across the net, around the 80s.'

Catapults are almost too good, you can squish anything at range with almost no reprisal if you turtle up in a good spot and don't mind letting them eat a sacrificial unit to trickle down the enemy.
I got two unhearted catapults in one run and the enemy couldn't even get to touch me most of the time.

Also if you get the benediction event give it to your best armored unit and it will make them immortal.'

I usually don't accept unless they're heroes, especially early on because mercenaries drain your income too much.

For me the best event is the benediction one which makes the unit reroll saves, put it on an unit with 5+ defense and they will win even if they are the only ones left standing.

The turns your units into undead event is great because it makes one of your starting infantry units into wights which are amazing anvils and always fight to the last.

I bought the Abyssal pack and the Abyssal knights are true murderblenders and since the AI doesn't like to put everything in ranged you can just march your way across the field without need for your own.'

1) Is there any difference between halberds and spears?

3) Is there any difference between arrows and bolts?
4) What exactly is the difference between gunpowder and arrows/bolts? There seems to be one but I can't put my finger on it.
5) Am I right in assuming it's not always better to counter-charge, some units like spearmen, or anything with higher defense really, are better off just being allowed to take the charge?
6) What do the big bolded numbers mean when you shoot artillery and hit?

And a few questions about how the campaign works:

1) Am I right in assuming it's almost always much better to opt for getting a new unit than spending money on upgrades?
2) Am I right in assuming it's always best to go for replenishment increase and unit size increases during level up? And more gold for the leader?
3) Seems like there's no benefit at all to taking on the boss battles (sword hilt icon). Am I missing something?

You can hover over the unit's card and there's a tooltip explaining what the weapons do but in any case.

1)halberds have extra power, spears are used with shields.
2)should be yes.
3)crossbow bolts have +1 power but slightly lower range over arrows, ballista bolts have higher power and inflict x2 wounds.
4)lower range higher power, but they're kind of crap.
5)the charge gives +1 to combat score plus the bonuses, if your weapons give no bonuses or the enemy has spears then maybe consider letting the enemy put itself in a disadvantageous position so you can flank charge them next turn.
6)dunno, maybe the number of hits?


1)If you can afford it yes, numbers really help but upgrades aren't bad.
2)usually yes, but increased replenishment is a must on units you send to die, units with really low discipline also need that otherwise your big goblin chaff unit will just run away after the first combat.

The simplification of some of the tabletop stats has its ups and downs but I feel like continuing the separation between weapon/ballistic skill and having toughness be separate from armor in favor of a unified skill and defense value makes less sense when you're going to make a vidya game that makes handling all that table checking a non issue.
It is fun giving ranged weapons to dwarf elite infantry and getting a lot of value out of any skill increases you roll for them but ranged combat is already overpowered in this ruleset, partially because WS/BS are one stat so missile units can't be too shit in one or the other so its not as dangerous for them to get caught out or forced into melee than it otherwise should be.
Almost spiteful nitpicking considering everything else the game does smoothly especially when its free.'

It just creates strangeness regarding how units are designed and the way the stats end up interacting. The meatiness and regeneration of a troll and the fat armor of a dwarf are treated the same when toughness vs armor created a lot of specific niches for uses and counters when strength and any armor piercing properties were considered.'

In Sovl stats are more simplified. Defense in sovl is a combination of two stats in Warhammer Toughness and Armor. Power is also simplified Armor reduction and Strength as a result. Great weapons main usage was to increase strength to do better damage against squishy units or deal with high toughness units, but they also had good armor penetration so they could deal with high armor as well. This output was given because they often didn't get many attacks and gave up the defensive power of the shield.'

I feel them kind of useless instead because unless they're undead after they lose a round of combat they run away immediately because of low discipline.

They might be useful in blocking big units with few strong attacks but it's really niche since those units usually have the maneuverability to get swamped and it's not guaranteed they don't run anyway.'

I think regular orc boys are better value than brutes. the way the dev combined toughness and armour (and removed invul saves) means that elite units are much worse value than in most tabletop games, because they can get smoked by any halfway decent ranged unit'

'I did the whole challenges thing and unlocked the alternative skin for the Abyssal exalted champion but for now it has no different statline from the base champion (at least from the army builder).
And also isn't available in the campaign.

So you don't have to ADHD your way to do the campaign 5 times for each race to collect all the AI made png skins.

I don't see why they wouldn't allow players to mod the game, it would be a perfect base to build a customizable tabletop battles simulator.'
