Damage is armor penetration, that's how Xcom works. There's is no point at which e.g an M-16 does more damage than a M-14 and in fact the more heavily armored you are the worse the M-16 is by comparison. You can open up the Gun Profiler at https://xcf.trigramreactor.net/master and see for yourself.

For most guns, "Armor Effectiveness" is best thought of as relative only to similar damage guns and is trumped simply by higher damage. It's just there to add variety and its effect is negligible except when it's used as a negative modifier for "flesh-only"guns like the Nitro Express Rifle, or when armor is so high we're seeing negligible damage anyway. When you compare armor-piercing guns like the P-90 or 5.56 rifles against their equivalents there's little difference.'

The main problem is that suicide bombers scale like shit. Among decent bomb carriers there's basically just dogs. Peasants and and SS are more expensive and slower and still ridiculously fragile, you don't want to use trained units for suicide missions so their stats are going to be just horrid and render them incapable of rendering any combat use beyond dying, making them very hard to justify the crewspace cost. You can't even give them decent armor because armor is wasted when a unit dies and neither the armor nor the unit are priced to be used as one battle consumables. A suicide armor would ideally fix this problem by giving you either a unit-consuming armor that warrants the cost, or a self-and-unit-consuming armor that warrants their combined costs, and is actually valid outside earlygame/base defense.'

The big selling point of necroplanes is the performance in combat, less so their speed and range. Especially in the case of the Daredevil, the twin 14mm cannons have more than double the damage output of an aircar with a single 25mm, allowing it to reliably intercept necropirate planes and bandit/raider airships (yielding a crash site worth about 500 points each, and further necroplane parts to scrap for 14mm ammo). Whether or not that's worth a tech skip to shadow craft/Krazy Hanna's 25mm is up to you.

Buckaroo is in an awkward spot. It can carry an absurd amount of low tech firepower, but has a high opportunity cost to research and build airballs/divebombs as well as getting a skilled soldier to fly it. Theoretically a player could loiter in the path of an enemy escort/gunboat and force an interception with their h/k behaviour, but who does that. In practice, players on Jack Sparrow can use them to farm ninja APCs so they don't game over to score death in September.'

nta, but what's so different in the gameplay?
codex is mostly a choice of shadowtech ships with a few unique weapons/armors (Grey Spellbook, El Admiral etc.) while personality is just random events.
recruit path is the most impactful, if only because of the big differences in playstyle between Uber Gals versus peasants/SS
having done most of these, i find myself agreeing with the other anon that it's mostly the same stuff.'

maybe it's just me but the game feels way different to play when I'm running gold codex with huge early game boosts compared to late game green codex where I take far more risks with zombie gals because I know I can resurrect them at any time
and the difference between like gal path and peasant path should be obvious, early access to a 20 crew ship is game changing and you'd have to be blind to think it's "99% same" as you hauling your troops in the 6 man airbus or any of the codex ships
no codex also plays way different because your air game is dependent on gnome rng you get to appreciate shit you'd otherwise never use like piranhas or shark jetbikes
or even switching your combat gear from all rounder assault rifles, to indirect fire approach with mortars or grenade launchers to ooga booga muscle powered weapons only is a big gameplay difference, ever destroyed a tank with a throwing hammer? didn't think so but I did
gals play different from peasants which play different from lokks which also play different from catgirls
or difficulty setting, early ninjas on jack sparrow provide huge pressure on the player and the geoscape becomes a maze of dodging your way through countless ninja outposts, which is more annoying than fun but it is different
I could go on and on and on there are countless examples and you have to be an incredibly boring player if you think recruit paths, codexes, captain types or difficulties are 99% the same'

It's a truck and an industrial vehicle with the driver's cabin being smaller than one tire. Both are quite bigger than a car.
I suppose you could draw something akin to a land boat, with wheels and sails but that seems like a complete dead weight the moment the wind stops. I don't think tier list is needed or appropriate here, I can just list my opinions about every soldier type
>Uber Gal
Jack of all trades while also master of all of them gal can be good at every role the only downside is relatively low freshness cap compared to other soldiers.
>Ogre
Tougher and stronger than uber gal but only good at shooting, heavy guns are their forte. Only available in limited numbers because of 1 per month recruitment cap. For me they've replaced 2x2 units as heavy weapon platforms, they're great.
>Catgirl
Similar to uber gal but they trade toughness for more mobility, arguably better at melee than gals at cost of being much more brittle, high reaction cap also makes them good with guns and piloting, unique piloting suits are cat exclusives. If last mission wasn't a 5 stage long ultra marathon these would likely make core of my army but new cydonia demands toughness and longevity and catgirls just don't have it.
>Gnome
Despite nerfs still the vehicle king(queen?), in one of the recent patches the deepminer suit you can steal is awesome, as a unique unit gnome bypasses nearly all limitations, they can be deployed to I believe every single mission in the game except x-prison, even more limited numbers than ogre but it is farmable from the B level mission. Obviously good with any weapon scaling with bravery but I rarely use them outside of vehicles.
>Syn
The ultimate in melee and mobility, having a unit with 200 TU just feels great to use however their availability is the lowest of all soldiers, you may go through entire game without seeing one, in the luckiest run I've ever had I had 3 syns there are no reliable farmable sources
>Lokk narr
Their stealth gimmick was nerfed until they've become worthless, the only reason to use them is for tight cavern missions and aircraft pilot duty, they're only slightly worse than catgirls at it.'
;

}

'>Peasant
Surprisingly useful soldier, their gimmick is potential because while they start the weakest out of all classes they have potential to be the best voodoo users, good snipers and can attend many missions where gals or other better classes aren't allowed including most witch or undercover quests. Peasant path also happens to be the strongest now and peasants make for great base defenders since they're cheap and disposable.
>Bugeye
A unit I want to like but I just can't, they start with innate voodoo capabilities and can trivialize some megapol or merecenary missions however all of their armor options suck, runt is peasant tier, cybermage coming in too late, loader disabling voodoo they just can't catch a break.
>Slave soldier
A truly useless class, they excel at nothing and they are easily replaceable by peasants while having the worst path out of available 4. A random hero can be fun to use but that's about it.
>Pirate dog
Yep no longer an aux but actual class, great for early game base defenses the barking drains TUs but I wouldn't have them in a regular team.
>Pirate blood hound
A dog but bigger and more expensive, in latest patch metal armor combined with gladiatorial training greatly extends their usefulness, but still I'd only use them for base defense duty.
>Chort
These barely exist, I've never assembled one legitimately you probably need to savescum gambling, play for a long time or get exceptionally lucky.
>Destroid
A red codex exclusive, really fun to use with in built sectopod like laser, does not gain stats or experience and you'll likely only have one or two.

tier list doesn't really make sense but here's an attempt, from best to worst
>cydonia tier
Uber gal, Gnome, Ogre, Catgirl
>fun but rare tier
Syn, Chort, Destroid, Hero
>base defense garrison tier
Dog, blood hound, Peasant
>forced to use them tier
Lokk narr
>almost good tier
Bugeye
>why do you exist tier

Catgirls are pretty much the opposite of ubers. Ubers have very high stat potentials but they're a pain in the ass to get going, either needing a lot of training to excel at something (their stats aren't very specialized from the start and their high strength doesn't help them shoot human sized guns any better), having to research and custom build most of their gear, getting put out of commission for months on end if they get hurt even with basic medical infrastructure, and so on. Meanwhile all cats need is basic gun training, a suppressed pistol, and camo paint or guerrilla armor to be a solid unit for the entire earlygame and arguably even midgame. A fresh recruit catgirl with camo paint can assassinate mercs either day or night with a poison dagger, with a risk of being instakilled if you misplay or get unlucky, but the matchup is ultimately favorable. They're strong units right from recruitment, a dojo alone is enough to cap their HP and STR, but their progression beyond that is expensive for several reasons.
>reactions scaling weapon options as good as the suppressed pistol and poison dagger are very rare
>catgirl armor is expensive to buy or research, and tends to give up their strong utilities like camo/SPOT or stats for protection
>catgirls are arguably the most mission-restricted race, limited to mostly the same missions as ubers except they can't go underwater either, and get cold easily
>can't use big guns due to low STR cap
>they get less powerful transformations and voodoo options than ubers
>they are prone to getting killed if things go wrong, even if you get them armor, making it hard to justify commendation dumping them or otherwise treating them as elite soldiers
tl;dr if peasants are redshirts then catgirls are Jagen units. The main exceptions are the ones with special titles, like outlaws/catwarriors/ace pilots, since those give a shitload of bonus stats.'

In this last phase of cydonia there are 3 unique enemies
One of them just seems to have ludicrous of shields or hp or resistances, I think it took like 30 elite plasma hits, 2 blaster bombs and 2 bfgs shots before he went down. Also has enough psi mastery to mind control a pre screened gal that rolled maximum voodoo power, nobody in this mission has voodoo power lower than 60.
Second one is a guy with this voodoo ray weapon that seems to one shot you regardless of shields, resistances or hp, I think that weapon has some cheaty bullshit in it since it ignored gold shield and it should not do that since it's mind type but aside from one shots he can just be bursted down in one turn.
Third is a special muton with power armor, but he's harmless.
Fourth is that it's a FIVE STAGE MISSION and on my way here you had to slaughter enemies by the hundreds, last stage also has extra freshness drain on top of annihilator so you gotta go fast
Fifth whoever playtested this did not expect player to bring tanks along, bringing any 2x2 is a death wish they do not work in this mission at all. And of course the player has no way to know this beforehand other than meta knowledge.
Oh and I brought 36 soldiers, got 12 of them killed or abandoned.
Not that this mission is some impossible challenge but the way it's made is as unfun as possible, this is some of the worst xcom content I've ever seen and trust me I played a lot of xcom.'

It's heavily contextual since your early choices can inform later choices. For example cat path will make you want to research camo ASAP. Gals Are Superior will make medical stuff a higher priority since gals get knocked out for long times instead of dying outright like a more fragile unit will. Peasant path has its own priorities. Gunwagon is nice to have early. Firearms Training is incredible if you're using cats or peasants or male touch. Contact Merchants for double shotguns or Primitive Weapons for javelins. You might get a fast Shadowmasters off researching Experiment Victims and beeline codex craft (keep in mind you need to build an extra extractor). The research tree is pretty freeform and incrementally designed.

To make the long story short getting a tank alive from phase 2 spawn point to phase 2 exit tiles is really hard and by really hard I mean borderline impossible. You have an option of a zigzag maze of instagib turrets or make 2 tile wide hole in a wall and somehow sneak past a different set of instagib turrets.
>just kill the turrets bro
Yeah they have like 750 shields and the game is spawning 5-8 reinforcement mercenaries behind your back every turn, you're stuck in a pincer move and you have to leave the spawn point as fast as possible.
Either way your odds of getting a tank alive past phase 2 are slim and death of a tank counts as if you got 4 people killed and also tank's freshness does not regenerate it's hard to carry tank reloads depending on which one you bring and this is a marathon of a mission so your tank will either run out of freshness or ammo or both.'

Yeah the research cost stated in wiki or in the tech tree preview is the average cost, so let's say you have a topic that costs 10 days, as soon you click start research this number gets randomized between 50% to 150% of that value so depending on luck it'll take 5 to 15 research days to complete, 1 scientist always generates 1 day worth of research there's no random factor there. There's no way to know exactly how much you rolled without cheating, so unless you dedicate 1 scientist to every topic there will be some waste involved but that's to be expected, later topics can take as much as 1000 research days to complete. If in doubt how many scientists should you assign to a topic, 1 if it's low priority but no more than 50% of original cost seems to be the way to go unless it's some critical research then sometimes it might be worth it to just throw everyone you can at it.'

How to fight the urge to build literal plantations instead of bases, fitting as much plots as possible? One plantation "building" takes up 4 squares on its own. 1 plantation of any kind as a token per base? inb4: depends on difficulty and luck of your run

One is always worth it in the first couple years just to provide access the Bee Hives, which are: a) 1x1, b) worth three plantations worth of upkeep reduction, and c) spawn a bunch of free base defenders.
Otherwise, I tend to start bases as plantation bases and then specialize them later. What I usually do is entrance, one hanger, because otherwise you get shit spawning in the sewers, and then seven tiles of useful buildings and shit. Radar, crew quarters, vaults, the aforementioned beehives, et cetera. That leaves room for a decent sized garrison and six plantations. That pays for itself and a decent number of defenders as well, and if you throw an Onsen in (and you should), the more useful parts will be sitting training in the background.
Then later on you can switch out plantations as necessary for whatever you need. I usually start trying to get more crafting space in once I've gotten to weed farming and the cigar, since that needs a Culture building (like the Onsen) which kinda restricts available space in the seven free slots, but is a shitload of money once you get production rolling.'

If you're using catgirls for the camo then you're basically paying a massive premium for the privilege to use Camo Paint/Guerrilla over Straps, and/or to send untrained squaddies straight into battle and have them be somewhat competent. Notably, dojos make catgirl base defenders almost pointless, because a dojo'd Lokk can stand still and fire suppressed pistols or golden guns down a hallway almost exactly as well as a catgirl can for a fraction of the price. Catgirls also almost inevitably have to give up the camo strat after training missions anyway because camo outfits have an inherently high mortality rate that is undesirable to put on an expensive unit with expensive unit stat caps. If you do choose to continue with camo reaction fire strategies into the phase of the game where it invites a constant risk of getting instakilled by a sniper AI, then Lokks are better for that due to being more disposable.

tl;dr Camo cats are mainly a training gimmick for farming stats against weak missions, whereas goblins are better for serious strategic application as camo units in real battles.'

Aim percentage isn't a hit chance in openxcom, it's more like a chance for the shot to be off center and by how much. This is why the actual hit rate can be higher at close range or lower if it's a long distance shot or there's shit at the way or it's at a strange angle. Also why you can use spray targeting cheese because your "cone" widens or narrows depending on how far away you target the shot.'

This anon gets it. The displayed percentage never was an actual probability, but a vague metric that tells you how tight the firing cone is. For some reason the developers stuck a % on the end of it and players have been confusing themselves since 1994.

You can totally hit an enemy with a 0% shot, it just means your cone of fire is 90 degrees wide. You can absolutely miss a 100% shot (despite your cone of fire being reduced to a line) due to the ordinate selection fucking up and selecting a point outside the target's hitbox. At no point is the displayed percentage in reference to a RNG dice roll.'

Actually, no.

You guys are a little misunderstood by what the RNG decides The RNG percentage decides between two cone presets. A very wide cone and a very tight cone, which is the "miss" and "hit" respectively. After the cone is chosen then the trajectory of the shot is drawn within the chosen cone. This is why despite getting a miss you can shoot perfectly straight because the projectile can still be drawn to go along a close enough path to hit enemies and getting a hit cone you can still wind up having your shots go off course especially at a distance.

It is pretty novel and I cannot think of any other game that does this.'

that's the thing, it had a ton of bugs. every game did, there's no bugless software. moreover, some bugs were literally gamebreaking, and some games couldn't even be finished.'

I could upload Windows binaries I guess.'

Easiest to get to is probably the 30mm from Jack? That or Highway House and hope you don't get your shit wrecked from across the map by an emplacement you can't see.'

The earliest are assault cannon, rotogun, or little bird's 14mm cannon, which you can get 1 month. The most convenient is highway house's 25mm but you'll miss a few months of early ships to get it and it's overkill for shooting trucks/choppers.'

Also about outpost defense. 15 dogs vs ratmen or ruffians is a fun puzzle but peasants do cost the same and are more versatile. It's a pity I don't have a training facility so they would also improve passively.'

You don't garrison with dogs because of their strength relative to their cost, you garrison dogs because they're basically salary-free and don't generate promotions.'
