You could argue something very similar took place in the early 2000s during the war on terror. And that people never recovered the comparative innocence and trust they had in earlier decades. The soviet union fell over 30 years ago yet its brutalization of Russians and other former soviet nations remains a problem to varying degrees, dedovschina being an obvious example.
