this doublethink creates people who *consciously* believe that drugs are bad for them, while ignoring the reasons they actually use them (the benefits they've been conditioned to believe come from the substance), and then are told that this cognitive dissonance is actually just evidence of a compulsive behavior that they cannot stop and as such they are doomed to 1) continue to pay for their drug of choice for the rest of their life and 2) give money to rehabs and 12 step programs for the rest of their life.

in the example of the video, one can imagine a 12 year old seeing it and internalizing the message that smoking feels OBJECTIVELY GOOD and is SOCIAL. they're 12, so they won't consciously reflect on this, but the benefits will be internalized. then they see actors playing badass characters smoking cigarettes in movies, and more subconscious connections are drawn. but the ENTIRE TIME, they're told by their parents and by their teachers and by advertisements and by stickers on cigarette packages that smoking causes cancer and they shouldn't smoke.

if these kurzgesagt guys get their way, this young lad will grow up to be a very lucrative consumer of cigarettes (maybe even other drugs!) and of drug recovery products (trips to rehab, books, groups, etc).
