there was no difference between going to failure and stopping 1-3 reps short of failure, the latter was even marginally better. effective (i.e. sets within a few reps of failure) weekly volume is what matters and you're a retard who read an outdated Metzner's book and now thinks he knows everything about lifting'

absolutely. look up any study with decent methodology where they compared groups training to failure and stopping a few reps short of failure'

Is there any reason this won’t lead to strength AND hyper trophy? You’re covering both bases.
Do people not do this method just because it’s difficult?'

not a single one of the studies I posted is behind a paywall

that's why we have meta-analyses, you know, something like half of the links I posted, the rest being one of the best designed studies on the subject'

Most of the studies referred to use untrained individuals. They grow from anything. This is a common theme throughout these studies on failure v. not to failure. Results here may in the long term as for all studies in untrained individuals only apply to untrained individuals. It's best to avoid referring to them for training principals outside of the initial novice phase. This applies to the next two meta analysis papers.

A study on untrained individuals. They grow from anything in short time frames, especially the typical 12 week studies.

In trained individuals there would be some similar results.
Though like all studies, there are a lot more variables that need to be considered such as whether or not the additional sets after the first set to failure are worthwhile (HIT aficionados generally have claimed they aren't) or whether or not the same volume is needed with fewer RIR than with more RIR.

In all these cases it is a fact that the average results do not necessarily translate to a random individual. For example, training to failure might be the only way to get one individual to grow after the novice phase while another might still be fairly responsive without training to failure.

In regards to RIR, RIR is impossible to estimate for beginners. 1-2RIR this week may be 4-5 RIR next week even after adding weight to the bar. Either they're going to failure or they aren't and they don't have the experience or stable enough lifts to be able to accurately estimate RIR. Either a beginner is forced to train to failure by a coach or they at best might possibly run into it if are pushing hard as they advance through a basic progression scheme.'

When I was about to quit training after 8 years, because life was getting quite busy and stressful.
All these years I had been fed the lie that more is better and if you don't lift 3-4 times a week for an hour then you wouldn't see any gains.
Guess what, I've gotten stronger in the past 7 months doing 1 set every 2 weeks.
Health has also improved because I am not overtraining and I now have more time and energy for things that matter in life.'
