Recently I've been reading a lot about birds online, though mostly just wikipedia. Birds have tetrachromacy, unlike us humans with only trichomacy. Effectively they can see into the UV range, which indicates a likelihood that in some of species where sexes appear similar to us, the males may reflect more UV light than females, making them distinct within the species.

An example I imagined up (which may be untrue, so take it with a grain of salt) is that the white cere of pigeons and budgies is super bright an shiny to them, and that the wing bars on some ducks may be like car reflectors. I saw one sitting by the waters edge while kayaking along the more overgrown parts of the river, but it seems black herons aren't supposed to appear in England. Around the same size and shape as a normal heron but all black including the beak.
