The Passenger Pigeon was (supposedly) aggressively aggregate and did everything as a group: they flew, nested, and brooded, raised their young, all communally, they even reproduced via group sex. Their species literally could not exist as individuals, so after a certain number of them perished it created a cascading effect.
Habitat loss, specifically deforestation, was also particularly devastating to them. They had the extremely poor luck of preferring the forests around the Great Lake area, so basically the literal only place where people in Canada AND America actually lived in great quantity.'

The extinction of the laysan honeycreeper and pals. The caretaker/ guano mining supervisor of Laysan atoll introduced rabbits as a food source and entertainment for his kids. Sea turtle/ albatross/ monk seal meat was gettiing repetitive according to him. The rabbits then reproduced and ate all the vegetation on the atoll. This led to the extinction of the laysan millerbird, which fed on bugs hiding in the vegetation. The local extinction of the flightless laysan rail for similar reasons. The near extinction of the laysan teal with only 4 surviving individuals. The laysan honeycreepers also nearly all starved to death prior to filming due to being nectar feeders. The last three were filmed when the crew from the Tanager Expedition arrived on the island. Days later, a three day sandstorm was kicked up due to the lack of vegetation holding down the sand. The birds were never seen again.'

The laysan rail survived until ww2 as researchers had transplanted a population on Midway atoll further down the island chain. Due to the rush to prepare Midway for WW2, there wasn't really any quarantine procedure to prevent pests from getting onto the island. Rats apparently got off of naval vessels and ate the last remaining birds. That's how Hawaii's last flightless native bird species went extinct. What's worse is that researchers saw it coming and tried to save them. They even told their supervisors that all they needed was an 8 square meter enclosure for housing two pairs. They were denied permits sighting the risk of introducing another species, the laysan finch, to the main Hawaiian Islands. Something about worrying that it might damage crops. It was completely asinine as how the hell would you accidentally transport a breeding population of a whole other species of bird. Moreover, laysan finches were also endangered and weren't even known crop pests. This was pure ass pull from the guy in charge of the department at the time. Even more damning was that laysan finches were super susceptible to avian malaria, which was present in the main Hawaiian islands. This meant that any stowaways would likely die immediately upon arrival. Just to spit on the grave, fossil evidence later showed that laysan finches were present on the main Hawaiian islands in the past. The population on Laysan was a relict that survived up until present day.
The researcher in charge later wrote multiple letters to the department head blaming him for the extinction.'

Saw a documentary of a de-extinction program where scientists were trying to recreate the Tasmanian Tiger through genetic modification of another native species related to the tiger.
I thought it was quite interesting but I also got conflicted. The genetic lineage of the Tasmanian Tiger is broken, what are these people trying to (re)create? Will it be a real Tasmanian Tiger if they succeed? Or will it merely be a creature that has the looks of a tiger? And what purpose would it fulfill? Can it be let out in nature again and function like a normal tiger? If it can't will it be destined to live in breeding programs and zoos?

The more I thought about it the more I felt like it was just a selfish human act to recreate something, not for the tiger, but for ourselves and that made me feel very conflicted about the whole thing.

How do you guys feel about de-extinction? I think it can be an interesting topic.'

They aren’t genetically modifying other animals to look like a thylacine. They have actual thylacine DNA to clone. Big difference.'

Oh, I think I might have misunderstood something then, I thought they talked about not having live DNA so they had to find a different approach, so they were trying to match it to the DNA of the tiger by starting off with the animal that has the most similar DNA.
That's what I remember from the documentary, I'll see if I can find it online somewhere.'

I’m just gonna go ahead and call bullshit on the Javan Tiger still being out there. From my understanding the amount of habitat and prey left is minimal, humans have been looking for it pretty hard, and this is a bit of supposition on my part but tigers are apex predators and known to be pretty fucking loud in asserting their territory. I have a client that was in Vietnam (different subspecies I know) and they would literally roar obnoxiously after every fire fight in the jungle trying to get the humans to fuck off.'

My understanding was that it’s similar to Jurassic Park where they’re just filling in a few blank spots in the genetic coding and they’re looking at other marsupials to marginally help fill that niche. The samples aren’t so bad they’re splicing in wallaby DNA or anything though.'

Ah you are probably right, I don't know enough about that side of the story anyway.
Though I am mostly interested in the moral aspect of it, is it even realistic, if scientists succeed, that the animal will continue to live in nature again? Will there be a suitable "natural" habitat or will we doom the creature to zoos and breeding programs?
Just some thoughts that crossed my mind.'

There’s plenty of natural habitat they could put one in they just need to control the dog population and not shoot every thylacine they see like they did in the 1800s. Rewilding would be a long process that will take decades. Mostly just zoo exhibits.

What’s sad about these guys is that the Kauai O’o was the last member of its entire taxonomic family. I think it’s the only time in modern history an entire family of species went extinct. It was a neat family too. They were thought to be a Hawaiian endemic family of Pacific/ southeast Asian honey eaters because that’s what they looked/ behaved like. Turns out that they were an offshoot of Central American tanagers that evolved to fill the exact same niche in Hawaii to the point it took posthumous genetic testing to figure it out.'

Not every animal is worth saving, Anon.
Ever heard of resilience?

If their existence relies on a thread of moral lucks, then, there's not a consequence of them really dying, since God would also want that.
