This is pretty old news. Lots of shitposting about this website over the years here. Practicality affects what you should actually be using a lot though. Like if you buy a HOB filter, it comes with media already, so even if 30PPI foam and pot scrubers are superior, you're likely going to use whatever it comes with. If you're filling your own media basket, I often prefer pot scrubbers because they're just easier to maintain. 30ppi foam gets clogged pretty fucking fast, so I reserve it only for prefilters.

BTW, I've done some less formal testing in saltwater and find the results do carry over, which was expected. But most of my "media" in my reef tank are natural objects (rocks) as they house all kinds of inverts as well. I still have some random media in the sump for emergency/quarantine tank purposes though. It's a lot easier to transfer over pot scrubbers or ceramic media to a hospital tank than it is rock/rubble.'

Pot scrubbers could replace the biorings in the same volume and be just as effective as ceramic, if not moreso, as well.

Also, I've had ceramic start to disintegrate in my freshwater tank after ~4 years, and when it starts, it starts to go quickly. Pot scrubbers will last literal decades (which is why plastics in bodies of water is such a big deal). I've had sponges disintegrate as well. In my saltwater tank, it usually happens about four times faster (i.e. I've had ceramic start to collapse in less than a year, lmao).'

'I posted >>4772969 but then got caught up in a bunch of dumb work shit and didn't have time to answer any of the questions people had asked me. I will add some details:

Schooling fish bum me out because I have a dozen Neon Tetras in there (plus a couple other fish) right now, and I don't want to dedicate so much of the available bioload to another single species. I know some people say that you can get away with 5 or 6 individuals for a small schooler but that seems low to me.

My tank is fluval stratum with a fuckload of plants and hiding spaces, and about 2/3 of the exposed stratum covered in pebbles. It has multiple ceramic fake logs and a 'cave' made out of a bigass chunk of wood and a nice piece of petrified wood. If I get shrimp that should be a decent amount of options for fry to hide out in, but it takes a while for them to get to a big enough size to no longer be considered food by fish, so I don't know if it would be enough.

re: Apistogrammas, I read that they can be aggressive/territorial, prefer sandy substrates, and do better with dimmer lighting, which is the opposite of what I have/want to deal with. I read that you can get away with a single Honey Gourami and they'll be cool most of the time, so that might be something to consider.

Most of the other fish I looked at required a larger tank. I think my plan is going to be to add shrimp now and look at other fish later, this way the shrimp have a better chance of building a decent sized colony while there are fewer things in the tank that will eat their young.'

Decent size selection of fish. Sells a lot of goldfish despite not selling most of what you would actually need to correctly keep goldfish. That was mildly unsettling. Primary reason I avoid this place is that they boldly charge 30%-50% mark up on everything. I don't know how they stay in business. My tank currently has a ph, of, like, 8,2 without co2 so they definitely arent fussy about parameters. Bought 11 of them 8 months ago and none have died. Their only downside is that mine are rather skittish despite their numbers.
There's some gorgeous long finned tetra species (ex: Hyphessobrycon eques/mato grosso tetra) but they are a bit larger than an inesi, so I dont think they would work for your tank.'

Quiet, concrete floors and dim lighting gives it a nice mellow atmosphere, almost always empty, owner is pretty nice and informative but after hearing him make a joke about selling his shop and making an offhand comment about how he could make more money leasing the building for business use I'm pretty sure he's at the point where the magic of owning your own fish store has faded.

Staffed entirely by zoomers. The tanks are surprisingly clean and well maintained. Their selection of animals seems to be the normal gamut but I have never seen them carrying shrimp, which is weird because they're currently running a "buy 3 get 1 free" deal on inverts.

>inb4 a blogpost about noise and sensor size
Yet the resized pic still looks just as bad as the non-resized pic. Effort is best spent elsewhere. Bracing is a good idea. No digital zoom is okay. One big thing missed is focal distance. Most people here smack their phone right up to or very near the glass (often to avoid glare) and you just end up being too close for your subject to focus well. Lighting looks to be mostly fine so we'll not go over that.

Regardless, it's likely a ball anemone, which isn't an anemone and 99.999999% of the time absolutely nothing to worry about. It's just a type of mushroom, and ironically less invasive than mushrooms people buy, lmao.'

ah, so your strategy was to lie that attaching a plant to anything with superglue will be permanent so you can do this now? fuck this is some women tier mental gymnastics.
yeah this is why you use super glue for plants that root- its like a dissolvable stitch. because superglue will turn into powder with enough time especially underwater+ the plant will naturally grow and detach form anything that is bonded to where wire/string might choke it. now stop wasting peoples time spreading bs - pretty sure this is what reddit is for'

With practicality and cost accounted for, anything in the range of 10-20G will likely be the easiest to take care of. Anything below that can still be quite easy. Just do a regular hob filter aquarium. AIO sump if you can afford it. Leave these gimmicks for when you have more experience.
The PH thing is mostly true. Most species of fish are quite indifferent to the ph of the water. They just want it to be stable. Some odd species require high or low ph but they are the minority. So, just be careful with water changes if the ph of the incoming water is different from the tank (especially if it’s higher).
As for the food, no, don’t listen to that. It’s going to depend on the biology and parameters of your tank but you should feed every other day until you are confident that the tank is mature enough to handle daily feeding. The least I would do is once a week but that makes your fish less healthy.'

Filling your tank will produce bubbles and kick up particulate in to your water column. Bubbles will clear in a couple days. Dust will settle in about that time as well. Particulate settled on your plant leaves will do not harm. If this is a brand new uncycled tank you may have a bacteria bloom soon. You water will take on a cloudy/milky appearance and any wood in your tank may grow a white fungus. Both of these will go away on their own within one month without any intervention needed. Any intervention taken often just delays the process or wastes your time/money. Water changes won't speed it up, clarifier won't clear it and neither will purigen. Just have to wait it out.'

i'm looking into starting a small aquarium
right now, i'm thinking of getting a betta fish, along with a nerite snail and a kuhli loach to help keep the tank clean.
i know bettas can be aggressive, so i picked a nerite because their antennae are less exposed than some other snails, and a kuhli loach because it probably will be hiding most of the time. they can all live at around ~80ish F.
what do you think of this plan? any incompatibilities? going with either a 5 or 10 gallon tank.'

Get a 10 gallon if you want to play with plants, you'll be grateful for the extra room to work with.'

no? they're like 2x the size of a betta and are more powerful swimmers than even a plakat. 20g is basically bare minimum for them.

>>4778608
Fish are hard because they require a lot more calories to sustain them than inverts do. Especially when you consider a lot of the tiny fish are schoolers and need a social group to not be constantly stressed.

The best candidate for this in a nanotank is a scarlet badis. Make sure the tank is well seeded with snails (both mts and ramshorns/pond snails), shrimp and/or scuds and has enough places inaccessible to the fish that their populations can recover from predation. Dense planting with a mix of floaters and rooted plants, some gentle flow from a sponge, light on a timer, also a nice craggy rock under direct light to be a good algae farm for everything to graze on.
I ran a setup like this in a 10 gallon with 1 scarlet badis for ~2 years before the badis died, I'm pretty sure of old age. I had it for almost 3 years but fed for the first year or so before deciding I didn't need to.

You pretty much need to go like 5x minimum recommended size if you want a chance of going feedless with most fish, and you have to be very careful with how you set up your system. It's not really something for getting your toes wet in the hobby with.'

I've owned several over the years and always kept them in community tanks with minimal issues. I currently have one with about a dozen odessa barbs, some loaches and a bunch of male guppies in a 30 gallon. Watching them when they're in frenzy mode they'd be bouncing off the walls in a 3 gallon. Yes they are placid and just sit there 90% of the time but I can't cotton to keeping a fish like that in a tiny tank.
I think the aggression issues people have with them are lack of line of sight breaks. I have a little stem plant forest that he chills in most of the day as his territory, comes out to eat and sometimes just swimming around a little, chase the barbs or whatever. Obviously don't pair them with any anabantoids, and also they really hate warm colored platys/mollies, I had one with some blue platys and he was OK with that but the oranges get attacked every time.

I've also usually kept bettas in communities. Only ever had one betta that just wasn't capable of behaving himself.'

'So I'm planning to start breeding neo shrimp and selling them to some local shops.
I have 4x 20L to use, as well as the main colony living in a 155litre aquarium for now.
They still need to be set up, but I was thinking of having 2 of the smaller tanks as the breeding tanks, and setting up the other two underneath. I will let them breed and move baby shrimp down to the lower tanks to be sold off when they are bigger. Leaving the shrimp alone in the two tanks above, will hopefully stop me selling off too many and losing my colony to sell from.
Is there anything I'm missing? I was going to run them a lil warmer for a few months so I can build up some numbers, will this affect the gender balance of the shrimp fry?
Cheers lads, pretty keen to sell off better shrimp than what is available to me locally. Haven't seen a decent fire red or blue jelly in over a year now. Most are wild type/low grade cherries.

volume itself is adequate but then you have to consider what it looks like after adding filtration, heat, substrate, hardscape and plants and you're looking at losing 20-40% of that swimming space depending on what you go with which for some bettas is probably adequate but you're not going to get the best display behaviors in something that small imo. I prefer the really small rasboras or just a selection of handsome male endlers for tanks that small.
fish generally exhibit the best and widest array of behavioral displays when given extra space so unless its a constraint because you're like breeding at scale or something i dont understand why you wouldn't try to provide it. im not in the ANYTHING LESS THAN 300 GALLONS IS ABUSE faction at all but keeping stuff in smaller tanks just isnt something that should be a flex or display of skill. its something you do as a compromise.'

Beneficial bacteria with lots of plants and wood( inverts will snack on wood)
Copepods/bladder snails set up first
Leave for 3 weeks with airstone/filter/dead oak leaf or catapa leaf
Feed flakes once a week for 3 weeks
Add cherry shrimp and shrimp of choice
Feed flakes 1x a week for 3 weeks
Introduce ONE betta or one or more pea puffers (depending on tank size)
