The sad reality is that American manufactuerers are kneecapping themselves on a global scale. They're so hell bent on selling trucks to Americans that they're willind to scede the entire developing market to BYD and their inexpensive EVs and become regional manufacturers for the US and Canada instead. It's a baffling business decision

Meanwhile cheap cars like the BYD Seagull have Detroit scared shitless because not only is it cheap, it's also made pretty damn well for the price. They could slap a 100% tarriff on it and it would still undercut the entire American auto industry. Keep in mind that BYD makes all of their own parts and they learned how to make cars from Toyota. They're been making batteries for longer than Tesla has been a company.

nta but this isn't true for EVs. The overall car might be built slightly better, but "US" batteries are no different. They don't have an incentive to make economy cars, and haven't for the past 20 years because interest rates are still so low and terms are so long. Also, consumer habits in the US have changed. Nobody wants wretched little shitboxes brand new from the factory with 87 horsepower and less room than a closet. There is a problem not limited to just BYD, but some cars have their front doors jam shut in a collision strong enough to cause the A pillar to bend. BYD also does shady statistical tricks with their car purchases in order to increase the number sold. For example, it creates other "independent" corporations that buy the created cars, thus generating new car sales statistics. It will then allow the purchased cars to sit in distribution waiting for actual buyers, leasers, sent overseas to buyers, or the car is recycled for its parts that are then fed into other cars.'

There is no such thing as a genuinely free market for physical products. Regulations for both safety and warranted performance exist and persistent violators are prohibited from selling into such markets. The legal concept of "Warranty" also limits free markets as many durable goods are required to have a warranty. Requiring a warranty is not the sign of a free market but that the market has signficant regulation.

Drugs are a highly regulated market. I don't think most consumers want a free market for drugs. If the market was truly free, then drug quality would vary wildly and the amount of counterfeiting would be great. A genuine free market does not prevent counterfeits or enforce patents and copyrights.'

Neither do many American cars. Not that the NHTSA makes any sense to begin with:
>In 2010, NHTSA decided there weren’t enough heavy passenger cars on the market to justify using the same roof-crush standard, as Consumer Reports noted at the time. Now that cars have become heavier, and the average car in the U.S. is at least 12 years old, NHTSA’s safety standard has become outdated and dangerous.
>[...]
>So, while a vehicle that weighed 6,000 pounds had to withstand 18,000 pounds to be deemed safe in a rollover, one that weighed, say, 7000 pounds had to withstand only 10,500 pounds according to the NHTSA rule.

>I call that a win.

If your car is breaking down every 10K kms, it's shit and not something to be proud of.

While some people on /o/ might have no problem wrenching a chinese car, you and I both know that the kinds of people who would buy a chinese car are the same as those who already buy mitsubishi; they've never touched a socket wrench in their lives.

If you think those with low income and poor credit are going to pick up a wrench and be happy their chinese car broke down again after only 10K kms because they get to wrench, you're deluded.'

>BUCKBROKEN MENTALITY

cars lasting 10k new is not a good sign of reliability you fool, in the end you are spending more for the same cheap car over time rather than a new western one.

also mail order parts HAHAHAHAHAHA good fucking luck if your reliable parts seller doesn't scam you with a cheap pig iron imitation and paying the same price as an original factory one given the record of chaboduo scams that usualy China does.'
