The LED was a mistake of an invention we should've stuck with incandescent and halogen for indicators and general lighting, fluorescent for efficient lighting, and HID (metal halide, mercury vapour, high pressure sodium, etc) for area lighting.'

it's the fucking chinese and also in household lighting the LEDs sometimes dont have smoothing capacitors so they flicker at the rate of the mains and it drives me insane and when the driver fails because of lack of cooliing the whole light begins strobing like the warning strobes on the work trucks.
I hate LEDs I don't want anything to do with them the world was so much warmer and friendlier with nice incandescents. All my 80's and 90's cars have incandescent instrument panel lights and i wouldn't have it any other way.'

You can get LEDs in whatever color temp you want. My whole house is 2700k LEDs and its fine. I dont notice any flickering. Auto is a bit more problematic since they went straight to modules and skipped making standard bulbs'

decent quality 2700k bulbs are fine but new construction likes to go crazy with the LED recessed lights (pretty much replacing the concept of the bargain bin boob lights in older houses). They choose the cheapest bottom of the barrel ones and they have the flicker.
Renovators will also put these in older houses to replace boob lights and florescent tubes.'

This is fucking maddening. It's bad enough in monitors and indoor lighting, but some cars also seem to dim their LED lights at a very low PWM frequency---basically just turning the LED on and off quickly and adjusting brightness by varying the % of time it spends lit during each cycle.
You can sometimes see the individual blinks at least at the corner of the visual field (which I think is a bit more sensitive to rapid changes).
They should just fucking ban any PWM in lighting below 10 kHz or so, though I suppose this might require a few extra cents in parts per light.'

Also if you buy LEDs, buy Philips. Cree is a good 2nd place. Everything else is a shit gamble and the modules usually die from heat exhaustion just after the warranty expires'

LEDs can be good since they have almost no UV and wont fog up your inner headlight plastic and the mirror finished reflectors like halogens and HIDs will.
These manufacturers need to stop being jews though and make the bulbs serviceable.'

It's not just up to the manufacturers. The existing non-LED bulbs that can be fitted into cars are strongly standardized so that the lamps' reflectors work with where exactly on the bulb the light comes from. Moving that spot a tiny distance in any direction could change the headlights' pattern quite a bit.
Because that exact distribution of light is part of the car's type approval, third-party LED replacement bulbs are illegal in many places. If there's no standardized LED replacement bulb approved for the car, then you just have to use proprietary parts.'

Eh?
When any halogen/HID bulb burns out there are oem replacements that snap right in. Even the aftermarket ones come close enough
Theyve just decided to seal the LED contraptions and/or make a giant module that makes servicing it cost prohibitive.
They could have fitted accessible slots for the LED bulb and ballast replacements like they did for halogens and HIDs'
;

}

if(Anonymous && title=='undefined' && postNumber==27638206 && dateTime=='05/07/24(Tue)13:08:28') {

'>>27638133
"Close enough" might not be legal. Halogens and Xenon HIDs went through various standardization and approval processes decades ago.
Those processes take time, and when they designed those LED contraptions, chances are pretty good there were no standards for LED bulbs in force. So even if you could pull the bulb/LED module out and replace it, the resulting car would not be road legal in many countries---unless you replaced it with the exact same proprietary module the car was type approved with.'

Thats the issue. You have to replace the whole damn headlight. Why could they have not made replacement bulbs/ballasts/modules that are accessible for servicing? If it was approved for use on the car, the oem would be approved for replacement.
Regarding aftermarket, and in talking about original fitment category not the jerry rig this to fit category, it's in their best interest to get as close to oem as possible like they do with all their other components otherwise they wouldnt sell well.'
