It's because of tax policy. Consider that I have to pay 400€/year extra just because I own a diesel. Diesel price is exact same as gasoline and the engine efficiency alone isn't gonna compensate for it unless I became a professional driver like a taxi.

Personally I love the fact that I can simply let go of the clutch and be launched forward, even at second gear while standing still.'

There are some quality of life issues with diesel shitboxes normies don't want to deal with:
>driving only low-RPM low-distance low-duration trips to work and supermarket will clog the particle filter and turbo
They'd have to rev up once in a while or drive a bit longer. Also
>modern diesel is too dry for a shitbox, nozzles will clog up unless additives are put in
In cold weather there are issues with >glowplugs failing
>forgetting to fuel winter-grade diesel while summer-grade is now pudding inside the tank
>modern diesel AdBlue™ systems suicide below 12F temperatures'

'NOx regulations pretty much killed them. Lowering cylinder temps to reduce NOx emissions directly decreases fuel consumption and increases sut production. Average compression ratios in diesels has literally gone down since the 2000s. Where they were once highly reliable and highly efficient machines. Thanks to modern regulations they are left neither efficiënt nor reliable.

this too. 90% of commuters only do short trips. Which is fucking terrible for cars in general, but even more troublesome in (modern) diesels.'

You forgot diesel is like 50% more expensive and gets about 30% fewer miles per gallon. Gas near me has jumped to $3.38/gal. Diesel just from memory is like $5/gal. If a shibox gets 30mpg from regular driving, and shitbox (diesel) gets 20-25, thats and equivalent to euro fuel prices.'

That's a crazy price difference. Over here it used to be diesel was ~$4/gal and gas $8/gal, but when the first news about potential war rising in Ukraine a few months before anything was visible in oil prices, the pump prices doubled overnight.'

diesels can run off of excess jet fuel that can't be used since it got siphoned out of a jet and the airfield would rather not risk a lawsuit then reuse the fuel. Just needs lubricant to make it flow nicely.'

Here, diesel cars used to get better mileage and the fuel was cheaper too (it was mostly untaxed), but their efficiency and reliability have just been going to hell with all the emissions compliance crap.
Now diesel fuel costs about the same as gasoline around here, you have to pay extra emissions tax for the car, and make sure the thing can pass emissions tests on top of that.
And at least in smaller cars, a modern turbo gasoline engine pulls about as hard as those old cheap diesels did. Maybe the diesel would still last longer if you have to drive across half the country every week, but few people need to drive like that anyway.'

>but their efficiency and reliability have just been going to hell with all the emissions compliance crap.
Bluebird is a manufacturer of 50-foot long school busses here. They're dropping diesel engines for their newer busses in favor of a Ford 7.3 Godzilla gasoline engine. Why? Because new emissions shit on diesels and raw cost of diesel engines in general PLUS operating costs and repair/maintenance costs. Bluebird themselves estimate everything staying equal, in fuel costs alone PER BUS schools should save at least $2000 per year in fuel. Then that ignores all the higher costs of repairs and maintenance of diesels.

Big heavy vehicle that spends a lot of time idling, and mostly stop-and-go driving they're still coming out ahead using 7.3 gas engine... In some US states they don't have emissions testing and people are paying $3000+ to delete the DEF system on brand new trucks.

Now try to wrap your head around the costs of running a modern bigrig semi-truck.'

I'm on about diesel costing significantly more, and doesn't get any better fuel mileage. Even comparing similar models, they don't get better mileage. What are you confused about? Ever notice the high mpg cars AREN'T diesel?'
