My current gear consist heavly with Jupiter series: Jupiters 8, 9, 21M and also Mir-1. Don't you ever buy a Jupiter-3 if you don't want to drown in soap.'

I don't like using it though, the one roll I've shot with it came out like crap, all the negatives were misaligned so either I loaded it wrong or Western imperialist spies were working at the KMZ factory the day mine was made. Still probably the closest I'll come to owning an old Leica.'

Actually, while many soviet lenses were copies, there also was a huge amount of original developments.

The most famous are Tair series and MTO series. Those are some crazy tele with sharp image in focus and nice bokeh.elsewhere. The only reason I don't own Tair-3 not to say MTO, is that I really dunno what to do with such a length, 200mm is a highest point for my purposes. Tair-11 will probably come in my hands sooner or later.

Also thee was a lense with very interesting development history, but crap image — Telemar-22.'

My rule of thumb is that generally soviet lenses are great, but soviet cameras are crap except for direct copies of very old RF (Zorki 1, Moskva-2).

The frames were misaligned not because those reasons, but because film movement mechanism in Zorki 4 was a disaster. And in every model of Zenit series same mechanism is so infamous, it's not a disaster already, it's an apocalyptic catastrophe. I don't know why it was so hard to make those right in Soviet Unoin, but even Kiev-88 hassel copy from completely different factory had same mechanism functioning worse than if was made of lego bricks, with a sound of thousand cars crushing every time you rewind your shutter.

Also, both Zenit and Hasselbladski were unreliable to the point it's fascinating. It's now a matter if it breaks, it's a matter when it breaks.

There were an economical and political reasons for all of that and now just «yoo, planned economics are a joke». Basically, they had reasons to make Zenit bad on purpose and forbid to project a better cameras in USSR: soviets made and agreement with DDR, that germans will make professional cameras for all Eastern Block, and that's how Praktica did happen, while Union focused on making amateur cameras and cheap as possible.'

>>4287598
This, just get a Praktica if you want a Soviet bloc M42 camera, or embrace Kiev 19 for F mount. Zenits with their APS-C sized mirror (viewfinder that shows 65% or so of the full image...) and very limited shutter speeds are only good for an ashtray.

Soviet glass in my experience ain't great either. Helios 44 is ok in the center but corners never get good, Jupiter-8 I sold immediately, unusable wide open, Jupiter-9 was soap town so I guess good for dreamy portraits? Jupiter-11A was actually good though, and so was Tair-3S, but making telephoto lenses is far easier. Hopefully the 3 will be fine...'

Should have grabbed it, that lens is revered as the best version of the Helios especially if it has the red P on it. I paid 200 bucks for mine but it was the red p, 13 blade, s/n under 10000, absolutely flawless optics, CLA with new grease.

>>4287765

My favorite version of the Zorki, aside from the Drug

>>4287803

As long as it's from 1950-1970 you're fine. It's soft wide open on the edges of things, dreamy and since it's a Sonnar copy, beautiful bokeh and cleans up nicely past f2.8. It's a daily driver on my FED-5b

>>4287925

J8 copies vary in quality, I have a nice 1961 copy that makes good images. There are variations in assembly sometimes they left the factory with elements installed backwards or spacers missing

J9 is a good lens if you find a late 50's red P model. again, variations. Mine is a good copy but it took 3 lenses to get it. I did have to give it a full CLA but once I greased it and cleaned the rear element and got the correct spacers it's a winner.

>>4289989

If this is an auto-aperture don't flush it, you have to pull the aperture assembly and do it right. But you can do it quick and dirty with naptha and a Q-tip, I didn't tell you that though. It's fairly easy to get apart and worth a good cleaning, I have a Domiplan which is kinda-sorta the same thing and I do love it. Compact, light, decent stopped down.

Maybe you can help me.

I'm in a desperate search of good 50mm for OP-pic mirrorless with ultra-low budget. The Jupiter-8 of mine does not meet my image quality needs. It's a very early 50s version with extra grip on focusing ring (that's why I bought it). You probably understand the trouble with shooting color images.

I'm already thinking of idiotic variants like cheap lens for Fuji from freaking Aliexpress (that will probably ruin the image in another way, bc of poor optical parameters as well), or extending budget up to Takumar 50mm, while actually I can't.

Speaking ontopic. Can you suggest how to buy another Jupiter-8 the right war? Will later black casing version spare me from optical problems of the lense I already have, or should I look for something more specific and rare? There are some entries that promise Jupiters made of german lens-blocks, if we believe those guys are not shitting us, will it boost the result in a significant way, or have basically the same shitty coating with just a bit better glass?'

If you're just adapting to mirrorless with no plans to use it on an actual LTM camera, my personal weapon of choice is the Rikenon 55/1.4, got one free with a Ricoh TLS401 I did a CLA on, then had to do the CLA on the lens too. Optically it is very good and wide open its soft in all the right places.

The problem is, almost every single lens made before the advent of C41 film is going to be single coat and optimized for black and white film.

You're not going to find anything really decent under 50 bucks because clout chasers and YT gear jews have driven up the prices on almost everything in the name of views and subscibes. The Rikenon can be found cheap because it's not a Zeiss Pancolar or an 8-element Super-Tak.

The J8 is cheap for a reason. There's nothing particularly special about them unless its one with a focusing arm and a red P, which means it came off a Leningrad, but optically they are the same.

They need a little bit of love in post to come out but they're okay. They're better than a Tessar, because its faster, but not better than a Sonnar J3, because its slower. The Tessar has good contrast, especially the later I-61 L/D and the Sonnar has both speed and contrast.

It's middle of the road, but if you're shooting black and white film, which is what it's coated for, and stop it down to f/8 or f/11, it's a clear winner in my book. I loved the one my Leningrad came with and I still use it on one of my FED cameras.

Want a nice one? Find one with a serial number beginning in 50-70, and preferrably with English writing, they are export models and are built to a better standard. If it's a black one on a Zorki-4, those are marginally better as they were export models, same English lettering applies.'

It sucks when the echo chamber actually targets good gear because this lens fucks but I also can't recommend it at all for the lunatic sums it goes for online.
It resolves detail more sharply than my "Tomioka" 55mm f1.4, KMZ Helios 44-2, Fujinon 1.8, Chinon 1.7, or any other M42 prime I own, the colors are great like the Jena Tessar, and the coatings make flaring a non-problem. Yet for the price the answer is that it simply isn't worth it. Buy a late generation "Aus Jena" Tessar, they're still $50 on a good day. Between a LZOS Industar 61 L/Z and a Zeiss Jena Tessar which is preferable as a cheap M42 commie prime?
I already own a decent takumar f2 50mm, I am just curious about these two for the price and novelty.
I understand they are fundamentally the same design made with good glass and both tend to go for $40-70 on a good day depending on how hard shipping screws you. Are they anything other than within margin of error of each other?'

Not OP commenter, I have a Zebra Tessar but like many DDR lenses the aperture seized due to old grease so I need to open it up from behind and clean it. If the aperture on the LZ is worse than that it must really suck. Do you mean that it's less reliable or that it just has a funky shape?
Also the Zeiss Jena lenses seem to have more vibrant colors, not sure if that's a coating meant more for black and white contrast or a warm tint but is the 61LZ lens similar or more neutral than that?

'We're at a point where "vintage" analog glass gets auctioned off for more than a focal equivalent modern chinkshit f0.69 lens with IQ so sharp you can cut yourself with it once stopped down to like f2.8, where the film era lenses are still mired in coma, bloom, low contrast, flaring. Especially with western prices of eastern bloc lenses. I started out with film and moved up to mirrorless for the infinite cheap/old system adaptability but if I'm to choose between a $125 17mm f2.8 vivitar that still looks shit with sperical aberration and an uneven focusing plane at f8 or a $190 18mm f2.8 that's sharper wide open, has autofocus etc, unless you're a masochist or want to use it with film, it's a no-brainer.

Eastern bloc glass is only worth it when you're starting out, to learn the focals, or if you're after that le veentage look.

Pic related, the Jupiter-8 I don't use because I found an f1.05 7artisans chinkshit that's sharper at f2 than the jupiter at f8 for 100eur. Have fun with your cheap shit lenses, brothers. I know I did.'

Personally I only have the lenses I do because I am an actual bottomfeeder.
Hell, 90% of the reason I got into 35mm at all was because I kept finding 35mm cameras with great glass for cheaper than the glass on its own. Part of that included Prakticas being >$30 every time I see one and knowing they all come with banger kit lenses, got lucky a few times and scored some Jena lenses that way. I also found a Kalimar Zenit at a garage sale for $30 with an export-model Helios so that was nice. It's no different to me than finding a Spotmatic with some nice Takumar glass or a beat up Mamiya/Ricoh with a 55mm 1.4 still glued to it. Considering these Chinese lenses go for $100 that still places them beyond the reach of my grabby racoon hands in comparison.
