    • "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
    • Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

    Quick FAQS
    >what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k
    >what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
    >What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
    Zoom h1
    >Can I use a zoom lens for video?
    Yes
    >Do I need cine lenses?
    No
    >Do I need 4k?
No. It will make your footage look sharper if it’s in focus, and it gives you breathing room in post. But 1080p is still absolutely fine
    >Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap'

Is this really the best type of lens for all pictures until you need some kind of zoom?'

Apparently the main caveat of buying a dedicated scanner is slow as shit workflow, having to edit the picture with shitty software BEFORE moving to the next frame, and feed it manually yet.

Have you built a scanning rig? Did you order the kit online? What can you make a backlight of? How do you ensure the camera is completely perpendicular and the film is correctly aligned? Tell me ideas to feed the negatives without scratching them.

I have a Nikon D3300 with the kit 18-55 zoom. I've read most use a 55mm macro prime. I only have the kit lens and some "macro" extension rings. Is that good enough?

The market is absolutely booming right now.. they want it all. The shittiest model you can imagine? Guess what.. they want it and they want to pay more than yesterday.
In certain niche markets these things sell for even above ebay prices which is insane.
Gen-z is unironically making photography fun again?
It is also quite interesting to think about the conditions that made this possible in the first place. So what happened exactly? My viewpoint is the following:
Younger Gen-z social media users have only used cellphones for photography.. they have finally realized that the platform has limitations.. they look at pictures their parents took of them when they were kids using digicams and want that particular look etc, meanwhile the large camera companies have completely neglected this market segment thanks to plebs only using their phones. just look at Canon for instance.. they haven't released a single Ixus model in 7 years and their last hoorah was nothing special in terms of specifications so we have to go back even further to find their high end models. Other companies have done the same.. there is nothing to be seen from the likes of Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Samsung or any of the companies that for years made these ultra-compact and cool looking cameras.
It find it all really strange. You have a generation that simply loves this type of stuff and nothing to sell them. Just imagine these cameras with updated hardware, maybe some fresh colors and "limited edition" varieties.
Also feel free to post pics of cool digicams.'

Before this I was a Nikon shooter with the D700/D750/D800 and really liked it but switched to Canon mainly due to the f1.2 lenses and much better customer service in my country.

I rented an R5 and R6II and they were nice enough with the pro zooms and the 50 1.2 but after trying the Z8 and the small 1.8 primes, I really was reminded of what I missed about Nikon. AF was better, the camera bodies felt better and more "rugged", DR was better but in fairness comparing to a previous gen Canon R5. One thing I hated though was how hyuge the Nikon 50 1.2 was- and that's my go-to lens in any system.

Is Nikon doing better now as a company in listening to their customers than they did during the DSLR days? I think I read they were overtaken by Snoy so it must be a kick to the nuts to be #3 now.'

Pic related - it's from my LX100. I've heard that she is kinda prone to sensor dust, but is this actually sensor dust? Or an error on the Sensor?

There used to be two dots but I was able to eliminate one with the "vacuum cleaner trick" - cut out the bottom of a 0,5l bottle and put it over the extended lense. Then suck away.

I know the S5ii and iix have much better autofocus for video but honestly if you want to get into filmmaking, this camera is an absolute bargain now for what it can do.

The built in H265 with vlog is fantastic. L Mount means you can adapt a shit ton of vintage glass to it and it can be easily rigged out into a cinema camera if needed. Think I might snag myself another one soon to use as a B cam for documentary and gig work.'

So I drive 15 minutes to meet with him, another 15 minutes waiting for him, and show him the camera and how it works. This fool whips out his iphone and starts comparing the iphone display to the screen on the camera saying the quality isn't as good.

I politely explained how he couldn't compare the big OLED screen on his 2020s iphone made to watch 60fps 4k videos in 2000 pixel resolution or w/e, to the small lcd screen on a dslr camera made in 2010. It literally only exists to display the settings and a small preview of the picture/videos, so you can then look at the actual quality on your PC through the memory card. Then this idiot didn't even know what a memory card is! I actually had to explain what it was and where he could buy one. And after all that he says, "sorry bro the quality is not good, I just use my iphone" and drives off...

Maybe zoomers actually are technologically illiterate. This fool ruined my day.'

This will probably be the last time i post here, some of these are new, taken with my trusty old Ricoh Gr i got way back in 2015 (which i never ONCE dealt with the *dust* issue), some with my Nikon d750, and a few from my Samsung S10/Google Pixel 7 phones.

A lot of these are going to be old files I've either re-edited, or old RAWs i never got around to touching, and just recently gave them my best shot. I will also add a few photos i think are my absolute best (i will label them as such), feel free to shit on as many of them as hard as you want, ill bite the pillow and take it dry.

Anyways, its been a great 10 years on this god forbidden board, and even though gear faggotry never slowed (in fact, it got worse, thanks Sony) you guys were the ones that taught me everything i know. From taking and giving criticism, to techniques and genuinely great advice, i got it from here (i still miss Bass). Thanks guys, its been fun.

Anyways, feel free to post any old or recent lowlight/night shots you've taken. It doesn't have to be recent either, post night shots from years ago that you're the most proud of, id love to see.

I've also tried youtubing some resulotion comparison videos on the same camera (with the same settings), and it's the same. Higher quality nearly always produces better and more natural colors.

String comment = 'Ansel Adams used to tilt the plate is his cameras in order to get his entire photo in focus at once, regardless of the depth of field. Now we all just go to the highest f stop value possible and shoot for the best. Alternatively some with set up with a tripod, and take 10 photos of the same exact scene with different focus points, and blend them all into one picture in photoshop. Others hate the concept and prefer a visual reference to the depth of field with an area clearly in focus and an area that is clearly not. This then begs the question, is focus better long range or up close?
I played around with the concept a bit. I took two pictures, one just as far back as possible, and then another on the close foreground. I did this trying to see which style I liked better. Personally I like the foreground in focus, but the other person I asked preferred the shot with the background in focus.

so what do you guys think? do you have a preference? Or do you like the Incel Adams "everything in focus" approach?

I have been collecting/using my lens and i now have some pentax k lenses and an m42 lens. I really want to try to adapt them to an old digital slr , but im just not sure what old ccd sensor dslr i should get. My budget is under £60 for a cam body (i know, tight) and like £15 max for an pentax k adapter, any suggestions for what i should buy? I was thinking cannon, like a 350d or 40d . Maybe a nikon but i heard they are bad at adapting vintage lenses for some reason? At the end of the day im looking for something that will adapt my pk lenses well, and let me shoot when im going out somewhere or on holiday. I dont mind if it has a cf card but if theres an sd card that would be way better. Oh, and for anyone who suggests micro 4/3's , thanks but i want to keep my focal lengths intact.

I assume all dslr's will have the same manual focusing systems from the time but if you could recommed an dslr with split prism focusing (if they even have that?) That would be like a godsend. I plan to do more zone focusing but only one of my lens' has the markings and im still tryna improve on quickly focussing.

Oh, also if you guys could give me help on decent adapters because im worried i will buy something cheap that will strip or not focus properly.
Sorry if what i wrote is indespiherable , but if it is, i really would apprecuate any help.'

Got it in 2004 for my birthday. Dad spent $400 on this sucker plus the 256-512MB memory cards. It was awesome with the 4x optical zoom and fit in the back seat compartment of my motorcycle so I took it everywhere and got some great pictures. Sensor died not even three years later so my only complaint.

I’ll have to grab a few shots from my computer later, but looking back at some of the pics I’m still impressed with the quality of this little guy. They sometimes have that “DSLR” look instead of the processed iPhone camera look.

String comment = 'Got a good bonus at work and decided to finally retire my Canon 6D. Will be going Sony after seeing what the mirrorless landscape looks like with CaNikon.

Canon, makes decent bodies and fantastic lenses, that R8 is probably the best entry level FF camera you can get. Still gatekeeping RF mount and will no doubt cripple R bodies to protect the cinema line. Lenses are probably the best but almost double the price of Snoys in my meme country.

Nikon, feels the best to me in hand and I really like the RAWs the most. Menus and AF settings make the most sense but no real Z mount 16-35 f2.8 equivalent and the pro-grade 50mm being the size of a 24-70 is a big loss since those are my two most lenses.

Sony, looks like the logical choice. Bodies have everything you could need crammed into them, native lenses are a good balance between perfect optical quality and being corrected by software means I don't carry around any too big or heavy. I like being able to buy an A7S/FX3 in the future if I wanted to get serious with vid. Colors/skin tones don't seem to be oversharpened/saturated like before. Ergonomics aren't the best and you do get the stigma of being another zoomer buying a Sony to shoot zoomer things but hey, it is what it is.

Pic related, hopefully me with my Snoy A7IV.
