/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

Original Minolta dimage software works fine too, at least with the 5400. I just installed vuescan to get the drivers but no need to buy the license for that. I tried silverfast with the demo version but it had some issues with focusing and light leaks from the edges.

'Well if no one is willing to or actually has a great dog picture I will share one I believe is great. My scanner kinda sucks and my negatives are dirty. I know...

These are the elements that I believe make this a good photograph..
Super sharp and well exposed image, simplicity/not busy but still has beautiful elements, captures a story/very meaningful moment for me, a composition that both adds to the quality of the image by enhancing "pop" and makes the eye flow very naturally through each element of the image. The height/angle of camera makes it feel like you're sitting next to dog as well.

Most of what I am describing was intentional and pre-visualized to create a desired image. I was half standing in the water to capture this image.

I guess the one thing I wish I did better was get dog's face in a slightly better profile. It looks a little goofy, but I don't think it's so bad it doesn't work. I was more focused on timing the vulture to be in the right spot than his face profile.

This is the lens I was talking about I fat-fingered the copy and paste my bad

That is the exact lens design I saw when I pulled out the optical assembly and did the CLA on my Topcor 5.8cm 1.4. It's even on their website. I'm going to bet the newer Nokton has better coatings and some other minor improvements, but otherwise, same lens.

I'm actually curious now I might pick up a Nokton and compare it, I have a digital adapter for my A7S'

Man, maybe I didn't get something, but 7 elements in 6 groups where 3 elements on front + 4 on back - this is the typical CZ's Planar formula for their fifties. And they discontinued these Planars because they are not good anymore, it is impossible to fix distortion and the vignette even on f5.6 on it (and compare it with almost perfect straight graphs for Milvus for example).

As for me all these _still_made_today_ nothing but easy way to milk idiots using absolutely free optical formula. I mean, it's a good way to make money, but bruh... it wasn't *THAT* good, it was just good enough for 70s/80s, but not now.'

Look into the synar monorail cameras. They are relatively inexpensive, and highly modular. You would have to change out the rear standard and bellows, but that only takes a minute or two.

You could probably find a good synar 8x10 for like 1500-2k on ebay. 8x10 lenses will work on smaller firmats, but only some 4x5 lenses will work with 8x10. The more modern 4x5 apo rodenstock lenses have huge projections, but they are pricey. You'll probably want to get some 8x10 lenses if you plan to do large standard movements.'

The ones I know of right now are Euphoric 100, Flicfilllm Chrome 100, and Reflx Lab 100R. All go for -$15 a roll which is better than Alaris-sold Ektachrome ($20+ a roll) but still pretty steep. Are any other small shops doing it cheaper?'

there should be a table on the back of your flash or something similar to it where you can see what aperture should be used at different distances for different ISOs

If your camera has a leaf shutter you can sync the speed with any speed. But for the majority of SLRs, rangefinders and etc. you'll have a predetermined sync speed
Read your camera's manual, this info will certainly be there

It's a bit more complex than that but I didn't want to explain it in details in that post
It's actually a self portrait at the beginning and at the end of each semester (and sometimes I'd take two photos so that at least one would be viable)
At the beginning of 2023 I made the first self portrait, then at the end of the semester in june or july
And then again at the beginning of the second semester in august, and at the end in december
That one was recently, in the beginning of the current semester, around the end of february
So I took around 5 in total (a bit more than that, but for now I have 5 for the project)
But in short, even by your logic I should have at least 3, because "every six months" would mean I took one at the beginning of the year instead of "starting the project and then waiting 6 months for the first photo", you stupid faggot lol'

Nobody needs 6x6(x9) negative to make 10x13 photo to their family album. 35mm was cheap, compact, easy to load/unload, easy to make prints at home, easy to travel with, easy to develop, easy to do anything. And film emulsions became better and better.

Welcome bro. It's a really good kit.
>What are some good resources for learning how to shoot film?
Start with a couple of vids on YT lol. It is stupid, yeah, but it is not a hard science. Find something like" how to shoot 35mm film" and "minolta x700 review".
All you need to do for now is to clean lenses, and camera, put the batteries inside put the roll of a cheap film, burn it and develop in lab. The result will tell you is everything okay with camera (does it have light leaks, does it scratch the film or... I actually can't remember rn any other issue what can go wrong)
>I want to take pictures of birds but I realize I probably need a much bigger telephoto lens for that.
you have 300mm on the long range of Tamron zoom already. It's a good range to start. And also tripod will be a good addition.
But before clowning with a tripod and a telephoto lens, have some fun around with 50mm lens, to get used to your new camera. Because you will never take good photos if you will dive into serious business with your device, before even understanding how photography works.'

NTA but this might be bad advice. Photography is art so if they've got innate ability there's not much to learn beyond the technical aspects of the camera itself. People who dwell on stuff like composition/depth of field/contrast/etc. aren't artistically inclined individuals and will honestly never shoot as well as someone who just knows what to do and what to shoot without even thinking about it.
One of the most limiting things you can do to an aspiring artist is tell them they need to spend copious amounts of time studying art before they can ever hope to be good at it. Book learning is for faggots, in other words.

>>4300013
Get out and fuck around with the camera. Don't think, just see stuff and shoot it. You'll take 10 crap photos for every good one, that's usually how it goes. But you'll still like all of them and just slowly build up a catalog of your favorites.
Beyond knowing the functions of your camera there's really only specialization after that. If you want to do night photography with film that's a whole world in and of itself. Getting light meters, film types, remote shutter releases, etc. is all more specific than if you want to do portrait or action.

TL;DR Learn the basics of your camera, and once you decide what kind of photography you like start experimenting.'

But my statement was just to go and have some fun and try to learn on practice and not jumping into the "bird photos" hole. Because the tripod, and telephoto, and wildlife are slowing you down really hard. And it is not good for learning because you should not extend to much moment of reviewing result of the mistake you have made. It works for me at least.'

What is wrong with his advice? Yes, it's pointless to walk around, take pictures and hope to get a good one. But I recently burned 2 rolls on a project to get the 3 photos I needed, and even more, I spent 5 or 6 rolls trying to decide which film stock, developer and process I should use for that project. What's ratio is this? 1 photo I was happy with for every 96 shots I taken lol? Is it bad?

What I'm trying to say is that if you work at something, it doesn't matter how many rolls you waste or how long it takes to get a result you're happy with.

How many shots of the same scene did Bresson take to get the final "Cyclist" photo? (it is not a rhetorical question, I'm asking because I don't want to google but answer is "a lot")'

This is completely normal. Most painters will put out tons of stuff they're not happy with but it isn't necessarily a waste of paint or canvas, you always take something away from it.
What I don't like is when /p/ gets pretentious and starts telling people they need to learn 8 trillion hours of theory and become photo scholars, that's nerd shit for people with no actual talent. These are the same people who micro-analyze your photos and tell you they're shit because a fraction of a shadow fell 3mm to the left of centre and somehow that's horrible in their narrow world view.
Art is good if it looks good, simple as. People who are talented don't spend a million hours pining over whether their photo has enough contrast before they even take it, they just see something and snap it.'

Sometimes you do get lucky, but shooting film is tricky if you can't immediately see the shot like you can with digital. Shooting large format stuff is different again, and in essence you're still missing out on potential shots that might've looked better than the one you ended up with (you'll never ever know now because you didn't take them).

I only shoot 35mm and digital so I usually bracket about 7 to 10 photos for a shot because I want it to be worth my while. Nothing worse than being talmudic with your film and only taking 3 or 4, developing, and it turns out none of them are any good. I did this once when I was younger and made myself reeee pretty hard for basically wasting a night and a roll of film.'

Maybe a little luck, but being a good photographer means that you can take a vision you have and turn it into a negative then a print with some consistency. You know all the steps and process to go from a scene in front of you to a print on paper.

I have gotten less stingy with my film as I've gotten older, but I also have a sense of when I've done enough. Usually with 4x5 it is 1 or 2 because it can take me like 10 minutes to take one picture, and occasionally hours/days of thinking about a picture I want to take.

This is inherently risky and always has been, regardless of skill level. There's many things that could happen, not the least of which is a failure of the medium itself. It is, without any question, a limiting practice as you're relegating yourself to a single shot rather than multiple shots and having the ability to choose from them.

No one said it's suddenly luck based, you're just being an obtuse little weenie.'

Shit like this you don't get to bracket you have to get it right the first time, if you can't get it right in camera then read up on Group f/64 and study their work.

Yes this is how flash works. Flash durations can be shorter than 1/10,000, shutter speeds you'd struggle to hit consistently with an FF f1.2 lens wide open in daylight unless you had a digital camera with magical infinite ISO. If the subject is too underexposed to register, you only see the flash exposure. First or last curtain sync determines if residual subject exposure trails or leads.

Are you one of those beanie wearing porta overexposers with a match needle meter rangefinder? How do you not know shit about flash? Is it scary without the digital TTL and chimping crutch?

Mine had some trouble clicking into place after completing an exposure. Turned out to be "bumps" in the wax on the drive gear. Used an old DS stylus and smoothed it out. Works better now, but will still not click into place on slower speeds below 1/15.

I wouldnt call it a snapshit. Maybe if I was seething a little... In all honesty I just wanted to shoot something red with my sheet film, OR maybe the harsh lighting was intentional and adds to the grim scene of decay.

The red decay, tangled mess of wilting vines contrasted by the vibrant green of grass ready to take over... idk...

How would you have composed the shot?

Also it was quite windy, so I didn't want the shutter speed to be too low.

Do it again with more tomato, less everything else, and make it so you dont have to squint to see the rot. The bokeh is nonsense, there's no overtaking, what's in focus is superimposed on the bokeh. Harsh light gives you contrast to play with but it looks tacky and confusing with rich colors.

Also keep your dog away from your film holders and developer trays and invest in one of these for your sleeves'

Fair enough even if I sort of disagree with your assessment. That's part of the fun, right?

It can be challenging to get a fully in focus image when you're up close like I was with this 4x5 shot. The dof gets quite shallow, and like I said I didn't want to take a 1 second exposure because it would surely have motion blur. I noticed I messed the focal plane up a bit on the bottom as well. Not too distracting.

Did you notice that all my recent images are much cleaner? I am slightly embarrassed to admit this, but I had to have my scanner on the floor where I was living last. Lol. I got an antistatic brush that I run my negatives through, and there's a good air filter in the room I scan/dry my negatives in. Big difference.'

A half decent picture that actually leads the eye somewhere and has something resembling a subject and a topic but the composition is skewed a little too far to one side probably because you just point your camera at stuff instead of composing. Used photoshop to composite image
Not even a film picture
Flat, pixelated, shit IQ
Photograph of other person's artwork taken as your own.

The nophoto finally posts a photo and it's the most shit picture in existence. Not suprised! Your seething critique is just another reminder that my photography makes you feel, and is therefore successful as art.'

Good taste, it's my favourite cam (and i had the stupid idea to sell it to buy an Om2, which i'm neutral toward)
