Bad idea. The moment you do a bit of work on a laptop, you're technically breaking the law, and could be deported. Make sure you always have your back to the wall. Make sure you get some pictures of landmarks, too, in case you're thisWaySirred upon departure.'

Depends on the country but in most cases yes
This is only a technicality so they have cause to deport people abusing tourist visas long-term, realistically nobody is going to care or know about it if you remote work for a few weeks as long as you don't admit to it

However your company's IT might find out if you don't have the skills to mask your location and in that case you can get fired or sued depending on data security laws your work is subject to.'

no. working counts as doing work for a local company. business for a business visa means doing business related activities with a local company on behalf of a foreign company.
you doing laptop work while on a tourist visa is grey area because it is neither 'work' which requires a work visa or 'business' which requires a business visa.
for all intents and purposes you are just on your laptop while vacationing.'

They asked why I had been travelling, and my answer did not match any government-sanctioned reason for travel, so I got escorted by police to give a nasal sample, then escorted to a barracks near the airport and placed in a room. They fed me three times a day by leaving a meal at the door, and I was allowed 30 minutes of outside-air per day. At the end of the week when my test was negative I was graciously allowed to pay for my stay. The food was good and I had my laptop so it was actually a pretty nice and interesting experience overall.'

It varies country to country

Most countries assume that work visa means you imply or want to do work in exchange for goods or services to yourself or your company.
WorkAway and similar often run the grey area where no real money is exchanged only 'cultural exchanges'.
If you were working for mcdonalds and then flew to Japan to go fix their ice cream machine you'd generally and legally need a work visa.
If your company is 100% based in USA and you go to check emails and do some work for said US based company, no one will give a shit and it's mostly not considered 'illegal'.

No one is going to care in reality unless you are a severe autist and have to tell EVERYONE everywhere you're some kind of 'digital nomad chad'. I know that it's hard to comprehend but keeping your mouth simply shut goes a really long way. Just have some kind of itinerary up and some reasonable expectations of your trip. For all they know you're just some mid 20 to mid 30 man child who lives at home'

Don't make definitive statements about a topic you know nothing about you fat fucking nigger retard, this compeltely depends on the coutnry. In Japan, working is working whether it's for a local or international company. If you work on your "vacation" no matter what, you're breaking the terms of your tourist visa and are subject to deportation if they find out.'

>They asked why I had been travelling, and my answer did not match any government-sanctioned reason for travel
I have a hard time believing this… what did you tell them? What do you think you should have said that would have been acceptable?

Given your mention of a nasal sample and forced isolation, I can only assume you were traveling during a restricted/lockdown period early in the COVID pandemic, and didn’t come armed with the negative test they were then requiring. I traveled quite a bit during the second year of the high pandemic (stayed domestic for almost a full year before that, taking care to get my nose stabbed regularly and to avoid countries my home country had on a ‘quarantine/isolate upon return’ list), but I never had any issues with arriving as a tourist and saying so. Oh, and I did have to prove I was a Swiss resident to get home from Turkey once, during a period when Switzerland was officially closed except for a few categories of ‘essential’ travel, but that was over in the blink of an eye. Lockdowns here were almost nonexistent compared to a lot of other countries.

>>2652439
When I’ve been asked, which has not been that often, I have said tourism and been waved right through.

>>2652527
This is correct—digital nomadism is in nearly every country a legal gray area. Many countries have wanted to consider it illegal labor—Thailand, for example, despite its great popularity with laptop hobos, has always been at least semi-hostile to digital nomads. They created a pretty restrictive remote worker visa to try and reduce the numbers. But they couldn’t ban it outright, because doing some work for a home-country employer, or entering to go to meetings/conferences/etc., both remain legal while on visa exemptions or tourist visas. The only thing that is explicitly, enforceably against the law is working for a Thai employer without a work permit. Same is true in most places around the world. So don’t ask, don’t tell.'

These are feds. I and many other people I know work while abroad. If you are concerned about ANY government sboop into your device for that reason or other ones, consider learning about hiding an OS under the active OS that they can check around in (maybe it has a game and some books on it, while your encrypted hidden OS has all your work).

They wont be giving your devices thorough digs unless you’re actively under investigation for felony tier crimes, or drugs.'

Where were you coming back from, after how long? And what (if anything) were they asking you about/accusing you of? Your last line makes me wonder if they suspected you of being abroad to commit sex crimes or something. But I’ve never met anybody who’s had your experience.

I’m also an American citizen, living abroad for the last 5+ years straight, and for parts of the year for 10 years previously, and apart from having to provide ridiculously primitive COVID documents a few times (negative tests at least once, and multiple copies of a stupid six-page signed affidavit that NOBODY EVER EVEN COLLECTED once; I was furious to have wasted so much printer ink and A4 paper when visiting home with my family of four), nobody has ever looked at me twice over the course of dozens of flights back into the USA. I’ve only ever witnessed foreigners getting grilled by the CBP.'
