/rcg/ was initially created as a way for the roller coaster enthusiasts on here to discuss all things roller coasters and theme parks. While roller coasters are the main focus of these threads (and the title of the general) there is also discussion on other theme parks, their rides, as well as the parks themselves and trip planning too. That's where /tpg/ comes in.
    >Can I talk about Disney/Universal parks in this thread?
Absolutely! Disney discussion of all sorts including rides/resorts/dining/trip planning is OK.

Thread Tip Pro: When in line for a coaster with a bunch of normies, feel free to autistically infodump to them every single iota of information you know about the ride you are about to go on: opening date, manufacturer, # of inversions, stats etc.

My mates and I are looking to go to Japan come this summer to some warm beaches but we have one of our friends who caused issue last time. Problem is he had a slight bump in with the law there, basically wandered into one of those police boxes drunk and tried to hire a taxi on the phone they had. Got a big guy yelling at him in the office as I was catching up to him to walk back to our hostel. He's now scared they got his face and prints off the phone and will arrest him at the border because of issue people like Johnny Somolia and other youtubers giving foreigners a negative light. I think he's lost it a bit from the online stuff.

I've told him that they police probably get idiots doing that all the time and it wouldn't even be worth the paper work to even file something so small. I don't even think customs even would look at some small infraction since I've heard other people spending the night in a drunk tank but going back to Japan without issue. Right?

Any advice we really need a 4th person to help keep the costs down for an airbnb. Has anyone been in a situation like this?'

Current plan is to spend a few days in Switzerland before heading North by train. The only 'planned' activity is to visit a small town outside Cologne, which is where my ancestors lived before they migrated to the US in the 1850s.

Besides that, we have no real plan or structure around how we will spend our time or where we will go. I am used to traveling domestically in the US, so the scale makes it seem like it would be relatively easy to see Eastern France, Belgium, and Netherlands while we are there. I'm generally interested in avoiding very tourism focused areas, and enjoying whatever the local areas have to offer. Food, drink, scenery, meeting people. I had considered looking for some live music in the cities we'll be in as a way to meet locals.

My only travel outside the US was to Shanghai, which I enjoyed but was very different than I expect this part of Europe to be.

Any general advice or suggestions on how to make the most of our time in the region?'

Humans are isolationist on principle so it seems like a contradiction to want to encroach upon another tribe's turf in the first place. Even then, it's so much easier and far more fulfilling to just use the Internet to learn about a foreign place instead of spending all the money to physically go there, and inevitably waste more time walking around than having an interesting experience. I hear all the time about how you'll meet unforgettable people, immerse yourself in their culture, yadda yadda, but there's no way this is true. You're still an outsider to the locals, and you still don't know anything about their customs, their language, their landmarks, their food, their government... It just feels so stupid to me.

Maybe I'm the asshole here but I wish we could just appreciate other countries from afar and not infringe upon them. I don't care if it's for school, or business, or sex, it just seems weird. I read up on what an embassy was the other day and it made me genuinely mad, that there are these little pockets all over the world where a foreigner can go and be patronized instead of having to even pretend like they care about the natives. How is that not at least a little fucked up?

Anyways, TL;DR is that I think traveling is inefficient and stupid, maybe even disrespectful, and that you'd be far better off watching travelogues on YouTube or searching for local websites. The context doesn't matter, the whole concept is off to me.'

I'm going to live in a place around a big city.

I would like to know what the nightlife is like, the day-to-day life, and what I can really expect from my coworkers. What do people usually do on weekends? How is the dating scene, and how should I really behave on a first date?

Most of the info videos on this topic lack of useful information; some are overly positive, while others are just blackpilled. If anyone knows of a more realistic source about what to expect when living in Japan, I would appreciate it.'

If I have a weekish where are some comfy towns I can base myself out of with a nice coffee shop to work at? I've been looking at google maps and there's some great options. Is Scottsbluffs city too big to get the TRVE Nebraska feel? I'd prefer to be in some tiny town. This doesn't mean it has to be the greatest thing ever, simply better than it is typically considered to be.

I'll start with pic related. A few years ago I did a road trip and my gf and I at the time were going to skip it and last second I said let's chill in the area and do a day of Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and wind caves before going to Badlands. I thought "I know Mt. Rushmore is going to suck but I figure I have to see it if I'm here."

And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how cool it was. The drive up was nice and the views of the portraits were great on the window road. Then when you approach the monuments it's a very grand walkway with all the state flags I liked. And the monuments up close in person are actually pretty cool, I thought I'd get the gist in a second but I did all the mini-hikes around them and seeing them in different angles was awesome.

I've heard stories of road trippers skipping this place to be hipster but I feel like it's well worth it if you're in the area. Not only that you can stay in Custer or Hot Springs and see Crazy Horse and the Wind Caves it's a quaint area. I seriously don't get the hate this place gets. It's not like the most spectacular thing and I wouldn't come here ONLY for rushmore. But if you're in SD or passing through on a road trip it seems insane to not go.'

Anyway, I wanted to travel around a bit off Credit cards before I get there, so I should have around $30k to work with, plus a couple grand cash for the things that won't take cards. I want to visit Japan, see Tokyo and visit some of the whisky distillers, check out some of the historical stuff. Maybe visit South Korea? Then head to Thailand for a bit for the nature, temples, etc. Then off to Philippines to figure out where I'm settling down.

Just wanted to know what /trv/ thought, if there's things I should be sure to do in those countries, if there's other countries I should check out, or anything else I should know. I like to walk/hike, have no problem going out off the beaten path, and I've got a pretty strong stomach and enjoy authentic Asian food, so no need to find McD or shit like that.

Fill in the countries and subdivisions you have visited, talk about your map and ask others about their maps. You can use the map however you like, the colors are more like suggestions, you don't have to use them, and you don't have to use all of them. You can add or remove colors and change the map as much as you want in any way you want. Don't like this map? Upload a completely different one. Up to you. Despite what some might say, there's no "wrong" way to use the map, and new posters and less travelled people are welcome and encouraged to stay and post :) This map is a group effort by our board, and we can only improve it if people reach out to share suggestions or corrections.

This is the newest edition of the map, edition 4.0.4, updated for January 2024. I'll post the simplified template in the next post. Changelog:

    Subdivision changes
    >Added Southwest Papua province of Indonesia (located in the northwest of Papua)
    >The Central African Republic created three new prefectures in 2020 that I wasn't aware of before now
    >Following a referendum in August 2023, Ethiopia's Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region was finally dissolved and split into Central and South Ethiopa Regional State
    >Norway reversed some of the merged counties from 2020 and now consists of an unholy mix of 15 old and new counties
    >Following the war with Azerbaijan, Artsakh has been dissolved and removed from the map
And this is why we travel lads. A country just disappeared overnight. The old Artsakh has been added as DLC.'

I’ve heard mixed things, you know? Some places are like an oasis of inclusivity, while others seem a bit… let’s say, challenging for LGBTQ+ travelers. Safety is our number one priority, but so is experiencing authentic Arab culture and history.
So, dear fellow travelers, any advice on where we can embrace our inner historians without compromising who we are? Any tips on navigating this complex region with love and pride on full display?
    Kisses and thanks in advance!'

I thought I might tap into the collective travel knowledge here since we are all a bit of a diverse bunch from varying backgrounds. So I just booked a flight to Japan next month May 3 to Jun 1 and I'd like to hear any tips or reccomendations from those who have visited there or anywhere in the Orient really.

This seems like one of the best months to travel there. Golden Week is just ending so less crowds and just before the wet season and before summer vacation for much of the world. I got a large backpack and plan to buy a second hand piece of luggage to load up with goodies before I head back.

I know there might be a bit of a culture shock when I get there so I am doing my best to be prepared as this country is probably the most "different" country I have been to. So please share any thoughts or your experience in the matter. I am a well off male around 40 and I am planning on staying at a variety of different properties including ryokans, capsule hotels, hostels and Marriott properties as I am a Ambassador Elite with them. Also, I love hot springs and considering walking the Nakasendo Trail. A good primer or must knows would be very helpful for my trip. Thanks!'

Then I'm going to spend saturday, sunday, monday camping and hiking at theodore roosevelt national park. I don't want to use a vacation day since I like to save them for a big trip If I can so I plan on heading to one of those three cities and working there tuesday-friday then flying home on saturday.

Which is more interesting to chill at for 4 days? I heard Billings is a methhead playpen? I heard Fargo has the most to do but may be pretty non-descript. I heard Bismarck is very austere and traditional.'

I'll tell you why I want to go if you ask. I'm not a normal "tourist" type person and not interested in "activities", i'd be doing things solo and not going to bars or pubs except to eat generally.'
