I never lived there full-time, but I worked there for a few brief stints (one week every month for six or seven months) and have visited dozens of times. I came to be really fond of the place, in a perverse way—I would describe it as pleasantly seedy. It’s small and sleepy, and has casinos that all feel and look like they’ve seen better days. It’s arguably a shithole. But it’s got an agreeably weird local population combining bizarre desert hippies/new age people, outdoor sports enthusiasts, gamblers, drifters, doomsday preppers, immigrants from Latin America and the Pacific Islands, and methbillies in broadly similar numbers.

My weird-ass friend who’s from there, an office manager, sporadically successful DJ, and first-generation Burning Man freak, described the place well when she talked about visiting her mother’s condo (adjacent to a pretty expensive golf course) and was warned to stay away from the satanists who’d just moved into the complex. My slightly-less-weird friend, a sort of business hippy (she’s from rural Vermont and works as a marketing director for natural food companies) who moved there as an adult describes the place as a “high desert Portland.” Both perspectives are incomplete but valid.

It’s sleazy and gentrifying and a gateway to the Sierras, all at the same time. I, personally, kind of dig it. But a lot of people hate it, for valid reasons.'

Reno is boring and a shithole. if you lived in Vegas, you could drive an hour south to Laughlin and experience a much nicer small gambling town than Reno. There is no reason you should ever visit.

But South Lake Tahoe is great if you want to take a road trip. The drive up 395 is amazing. Once you hit Tahoe, you can cross the state line and hit the casinos on the Nevada side. It's awesome in summer and winter. It's also a cool place to go if you have a dog because there are off-leash dog beaches where they can swim. The hiking is amazing too. There are some really gorgeous waterfalls. If you really have to see it, you can cruise down the mountain and spend an hour or two in Reno. The only thing worth doing is the giant Scheels sporting goods store and maybe hitting a brewery or two.'

Reno is a more normal city than Vegas by far, even in Vegas suburbs there's shitty casinos locals go to but Reno has just a few and the rest of it is normal people that work normal jobs. The area is trying hard to get away from dependency on gambling so there are fewer casinos than there were and Amazon warehouses and similar things are going up everywhere. Tesla changed the place, I knew it would. I don't think they're a big contributor to Reno employment but suddenly the area started getting attention. Houses used to be under $100k for a perfectly good house, now prices are the same as inland California.
>>2653974
I'd say it's more of a small Denver that happens to have casinos than a Portland. Portland isn't redneck enough. It's changing fast though, the tech remote work is giving it a faggier vibe like actual Denver and the working class schmucks that comprise most of the people born in Reno are getting priced out. Climate is similar to maybe SLC Utah, dry-ish mountains, it gets cold, wind and winter weather can be rough. Maybe not a great place to visit though there are a few attractions, Tahoe, Virginia City is neat, the National Auto Museum is cool, the old downtown area is cleaning up a lot, Hot August Nights if you're into old cars, but it is a much better place to live in than Vegas is, hands down. There's more civic pride in Reno and it seems cleaner and prettier, it's also much whiter.
>>2654001
I moved out of the west coast to get away from faggy redditors that say shit like "walkable."
>>2654019
It is not, having spent time in both (I have family in BHC). Laughlin attracts the bottom of the barrel, large Mexicans families from LA bringing their own bedding, spreading bedbugs, old as fuck old farts, chain smokers (never seen so many people smoking as in Laughlin), tweakers. Only nice hotels are Nugget and Aquarius, rest are dumps. Reno has this vibe too but the casinos in Laughlin are stingier. Reno still has a lot of deals, like old Vegas.'

Agree on this. I lived in Portland 2009-2015 when it got “cool” and Reno reminds me of Portland’s heyday. Lots of hipsters and craft beer and good pizza and art, which isn’t my scene really but makes for a good night out once in a while'

Hotel rooms are cheaper than those in Vegas, but there isn't really all that much to do besides gamble. They're really trying to spice up the River Walk with festivals and whatnot, but from personal experience, it's really not worth it. Other than that, occasionally a washed-up or B-list celebrity will do a show at the Silver Legacy, but as for quality entertainment, you're really better off staying in Vegas.
I'd say the only saving grace is that it is near Virginia City and Lake Tahoe, which are both worth seeing if you're staying in Reno.
As a local to the area, I'd suggest staying in Tahoe instead, and making Reno/Virginia City a day trip.'

Most people would bike to work around 8AM where it's about 75 and breezy then back home when it's kinda hot but a e-bike in PAS saves you any issue.

I went to Reno right after lockdown. It was more lowkey and easier to manuever than Vegas but everything felt a lot less lively, way more outdated, and it was mostly full of 40+ people.
