This thread is dedicated to all animals of the reptilia and amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
>morphmarket.com
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
>Type and size of animal
>Enclosure dimensions
>Humidity and temperature
>Type of substrate
>The decor you use
>How often you feed
>The type of food you use
>If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
>How often you handle
>Who you bought the animal from

A low power heating mat would never get that hot unless it caught fire. Get one that’s weak enough that it can’t overheat the crickets even at full power. The mat would only need to make a supplementary amount of heat. Crickets don’t need heat if your house isn’t cold, chasing specific temperature numbers is unnecessary for them

No. The eggs will hatch at room temperature just fine
>and they all die a week later. How can I have a sustained population? I'm thinking of just using some 13 gal plastic bins I have.
the bins would have been better to begin with. Crickets dying quickly is normal, the adults you buy from the store are often already at the end of their life in addition to the fact that they are susceptible to disease and cannibalise easily. Crickets are the worst choice to breed at home, you’d be better off with roaches'

Ok so I just unplugged the bulb. Should I remove the egg container from the tank to prevent cannibalism by the larger crickets? I see some videos telling you to cover the container with a lid with no air holes to let the pinheads hatch without escaping. Is that a good option?

I bought the small-medium sized crickets, but they are mostly pregnant already because they started laying eggs just as soon as I got them and from what I understand about cricket life cycle is that they die after they lay their eggs.

Next time I'll get maybe 200 crickets and put them in separate bins.'

The alligator farming system includes wild collection of eggs because the alligators don't breed in the farms. They then release sufficient established young alligators to be a net positive to the wild population before they start to really grow out the ones they are going to harvest. So there's basically no human selection happening except for maybe a reduction to nest defense instincts and encouragement of nest site selection that's accessible to farmers (since the females that can be lured away from the nest and females who build nests where farmers can reach them have improved breeding success due to human care for the most vulnerable age class of their offspring).'

Cakes that use a shit ton of fondant generally taste like shit because they (obviously) prioritize presentation over taste. Fondant itself is absolute garbage tier. Yes, it's sweet. Super sweet. Doesn't mean it tastes good. Fondant also fucks with the moisture of the cake itself, and most of the time the cake becomes rubbery rather than spongey.

If you get a REALLY good baker, then the cake will be fine. But that's just it. It'll be FINE. Not amazing, and you'll be paying out the ass for it. There are tons of ways to decorate a cake that looks awesome and will actually enhance the flavor that doesn't involve fondant. Fondant is purely for aesthetics.'

My corn snake is having issues passing some of her last eggs. She is 27 years old and this is her first season of ever producing eggs (very weird timing but w/e). These eggs are 100% not fertilized so I'm not too worried that they are going to glue themselves to her, at least not anytime soon. So far she doesn't seem to be in any distress aside obviously looking like she has a swollen butt but I'm keeping a close eye on her. I've read that since I know they are infertile eggs that her likely-hood of needing a vet ASAP is not an immediate necessity but I won't hesitate to take her if her health turns south.

She has already passed 3 but they were spaced out over a 6 day period (2 days between each). It looks like she still has 2 more based on the size of the lump near her vent.

I come looking to pick the brain of anyone here that can shoot me their thoughts of how to continue. I currently have a reptile probing kit on the way which should be here in a day or two to see if I can help aspirate the eggs. I am also, beginning today, giving her a bath once a day for about 30-45min to try and warm her up a bit and loosen her up. Besides that, what else would you recommend I try besides rushing her to the vet?'

My gut feeling was that I didn’t agree with him either, but it’s more complex than just “does this animal foul my house with its waste?”
Generally my dogs never shit in the house unless they are having a medical emergency, the last two puppies I got came housetrained, because they were farm pups who’s mothers had access to the outdoors and not kennel dogs who lived in whelping pens, so by that metric, the lizards are WAY dirtier. But lizards don’t spend all spring having to have their feet sprayed off to keep them from tracking mud everywhere, you just need to worry about substrate, and that easily rinses off their lizard feet when you put them in the bin of warm water to try and induce a bowel movement, so it’s a nothingburger.
So when you consider shed fur from the dogs, the lizards do create less mess, it’s just that the mess they create is typically more off-putting. And when they let one go in their enclusure, the noise is rude and it does stink up the room, so an enclosure for a large lizard in your bedroom is absolutely a game of roulette if you’re trying to get laid.
Cats are probably uniformly worse for home hygiene than lizards. Both shit in a box in your house and may occasionally shit outside the box in your house, but cats track litter dust and granules all over and shed like a dog, and like a dog can track mud all over your house if you let them outside.

So, hes kinda right, even if I personally feel my monitor is a bigger hassle than my dogs; I feel that way is because of the way I manage the mess my dogs make and not just the idea that my dogs make less mess.'

I have a snake and two dogs. Reptiles are just significantly cleaner, they don't produce oderous body oils, they don't shed, they use the bathroom once a day to once a month. No random vomit because they snuck a bite of human food that upset their stomach. They never track dirt/dust/mud/poop back into your house. I think if it wasn't for muddy paws, the dog would actually be cleaner, or at least the cleaning I'd have to do for the dog would be cleaning I have to do anyways. There is shed hair and dander and stuff, but that gets cleaned by the normal cleaning tasks I'd have to do on a regular basis to avoid living in human filth if I didn't own a dog. A snake would be way cleaner, because of the low meal frequency, but I've been thinking about it, and I wouldn't be dealing with spot cleaning related substrate replacement, periodic replacement and transplanting of destroyed plants, feeder insect cultures, etc, without the lizard. Except for the feeder culture maintenance, this is not daily stuff, but it adds up.
>>4777109
The dog shit and piss is outside. The lizard shit and piss is in a box full of dirt and plants and isopods that I have to spot clean or a tote with shallow warm water that I have to carry to the toilet and pour out without spills or splashing.
And while inducing a bm with a shallow tub of warm water works 95% of the time, it still means that I generally am cleaning lizard shit or piss off the floor or furniture, or myself at least once a year. I could avoid this by just not handling my monitor or taking him out of the enclosure, but I want to handle the monitor and wouldn't want to have a monitor I couldn't handle or let free roam. I can go a decade without a mammal pet accident. I haven't had a pet cat since I was living with my parents. I don't like living with an indoor cat and I don't like having outdoor cats enough to want to deal with the risk of premature death of a pet or the environmental impact of a cat that I'm letting run wild. I've never had any pet rodents, so I can't speak to them.'

that said people overrate how hard they are. its like a saltwater reef aquarium versus a typical lizard like a crestie or leopard gecko being a standard planted setup. Most of the additional work is in research and system design, the day to day care is no more complex. you just need to understand that your enclosure is not a doghouse or a hamster cage, you're creating a life support system for your animal. With fish I think its way more obvious that you need to do this since obviously they dont live very long without water, but reptiles will linger on for months or even years before keeling over due to inadequate environments.'

It can also lead to factory farming conditions that do not cause the animals to suffer. Obviously, this limits your selection of livestock to particularly stupid and passive herd animals, so still no dog meat for you chang.'

I can see his pelvis so I'm worried he's getting too thin, he IS still regularly shitting and is green and active, so I'm not panicking, but I'm wondering if there are any good, slow moving insects I can keep in a small dish up on his level so he can have easier access to food.
