Really sorry to hear that, I don't really have much advice, but for those who are looking for large breed dogs to do their due diligence with genetics, joint testing, and leaving the dog intact. A dog with joint issues will do much better with its hormones to support proper muscle, bone, and connective tissues. It's much easier with male dogs too, no worries about messy heat cycles and the risk of puppies.'

Get the facts about the raw feeding myth. To date, no dog or human has experienced malnutrition or poor health because their food was cooked. If you buy premade raw food, you should cook it via sous vide or a pressure cooker (most quality kibble is pressure cooked so nutrients don't leach into oil/water).

A border collie's "working drive" doesn't know what sheep or farms are. Weirdo breed fanboys might care and write a cringe rant about traditions bla bla bla.

Working grade herding dogs are just more anxious, prone to repetitive behavior, have a strong modified prey drive, and place a lot of emotional weight on the feedback they get from their owner. This could have a lot of applications besides farm work, and 2 and 4 make them excellent for obedience and service dog tasks, but the average collie would need to participate in agility courses to be 100% happy. The below average collie probably doesn't care and is just a normal dog but not retarded.'

>some show dogs of ___ breed inherited a deformity
>therefore all of them did
this is a logically invalid statement and incongruent with observed reality. there is a german shepherd in this very thread who is reportedly a show line dog, but exhibits no deformities. on the other hand, many mutts inherited hip dysplasia from an affected parent.

although what is true is that all huskies and all german shepherds are highly intelligent, well tempered dogs and often live as long as 15 years. they are incredible animals with many jobs. for example, both huskies and german shepherds can hunt burrowing animals as well as many terriers and hounds, track larger game, control pests, alert their owners to intruders, and learn to herd (but huskies do best with reindeer, and german shepherds do better with cattle than sheep). it is actually a genetic impossibility for these dogs to be anything but very smart and ideal pets for high IQ owners. if they were not, they would not be recognized as being their breeds, because the gene for upright ears is closely tied to brain growth.

you can test this by raising a german shepherd puppy. as their ears stand up, they get smarter. science.'

If your dog is a little horse you should take them to the pet so they can be prescribed horse dewormer. this removes the equine worms from their bloodstream so the gradual mutation into a horse drone can reverse itself - do this before the mutation completes, your former friend drains you of your minerals, and infects your near-lifeless body with the same disease, which will result in you also turning into a horse and targeting your friends and family to satiate your hunger.

If your dog is a little hoarse antibiotics and antitussives could help them feel better but they'll probably be ok in 2 weeks'

She was sleeping snout down and really stiff. She has her ears and tail down, doesn’t want to walk/go anywhere (I tried to take her out and she just laid down and when I got her out the door she refused to leave the front mat) and keeps licking her tounge in and out. She keeps wanting belly rubs but not in a normal way. She refuses to get up unless we pick her up, when she does nothing seems super off until but she immediately goes to lay back down. She also won’t drink any water. She’s extremely tense and I don’t know what’s wrong. Seems weak. Any help would be greatly appreciated.'

Hard to know what he's thinking, if nothing bad has ever happened to him there, his temperament may just be fearful of unfamiliar places. Either way you need to instill confidence in him that nothing bad will happen when he's with you, and also associate going new places with rewards and fun activities. The worst thing to do is give in to the fear, because your puppy will learn that throwing a fit will get it out of the situation, so even if you have to bring a lawn chair with you just go to the field and hang out until your dog starts to chill out. If nothing is happening your puppy won't throw a fit forever, it'll lay down and calm down.'

This is my 11 month old mastiff mutt i got from my brother.
Sire is a hog dog mutt of dogo Argentino, Tosa inu and sorrell line apbt thats used for feral hogs around the area . mom's purebred Boerboel for personal protection.
Mom was in heat and about to be bred to another boerboel, unfortunately my uncle's hog dog (the sire) tunneled underground through the fence and got to her. by the time my aunt let me know they were in tie already which i then stopped, but too late it seems.
He was the biggest goofiest pup of the litter and he's been great so far but starting to be agressive to other males, which is not totally unexpected given the breed involved, problem is its random, sometimes small dogs bark and he idgaf, sometimes a harmless golden looks at him the wrong way and he goes off, not sure really. Another problem is that he is super exciteable around small screaming kids, problem because he is already 63 kg (140ish lbs) and predicted full weight is 70kg maybe more (155 lbs) so he knocks them over and pins them sometimes. All my cousins wrestle so this is not a problem but he scares other kids in the park sometimes. I'm trying to train these issues but dont know where to start.

You need to correct your dog.
Cesar Milan vacuum training:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIFsIfny6Qg
Dog Daddy vacuum training:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScoMCF7LttE
Start with this, it's easier than correcting dog dominance.
However you need to do the same thing with dog dominance in a period of 4 months as well since 15 months is when dogs mature. A dog standing over another dog's head or back is unacceptable (dog dominance), same for pinning other dogs. And he should learn to be more gentle with kids.
You can apply the same method for all of the above.'

this anon is also correct, forgot to include this originally. when he's a bit older, simply sticking it out with him will fix a lot of issues. I like to say "the only way out, is through" - allowing him to control the situation with fits teaches him that bad behavior works. if you can guide him with a firm, calm hand, he will have his confidence boosted each time he encounters and conquers something scary. that being said, be careful not to reward him for fearfulness or apprehension with petting or cooing etc. these count as 'rewards' for dogs.'

oh okay. It might just be that he is excitable/reactive. I think anons suggestion that you take a camp chair and just chill out (you could read a book, play an instrument if you do such a thing, or simply watch the world go by) until he relaxes. It's important to mark undesirable behavior by saying "No" firmly. If he doesn't listen, escalate to correction (I'm not saying kick him, but a firm tap or a poke on the shoulder/ribs can do wonders), so he will understand that "no" has meaning, that being a precedent to correction. When he does finally relax, reward with a short head pat, or, my personal favorite, a simple "good". This rewards him without overdoing it or running the risk of exciting him so much that he loses the ability to concentrate. At his age, small training treats are okay too, but I don't like to use them past 8 months to 1 year, as I don't appreciate needing to offer food to convince the dog to behave normally. At that point he knows the rules and expectations and doesn't need to be rewarded with food to keep to that standard, in my opinion. I trained an extremely reactive shepherd/husky/shar pei mix with this method, so I promise I'm not talking out of my ass. pic related is my boy relaxing in the cool river after a walk on a hot day'

Impossible. The murderhound DNA in bassets runs strong. These dogs are so dangerous that only prong and shock collars can temper their violent urges. Yes, they do cause their own trauma, but the danger from a traumatized basset is less than one that has not had its instinct to murder random people suppressed. Plus they're fucking retarded and don't even figure out positive training half the time.

Save the positive only stuff for smart, healthy, mentally stable dogs, ie: german shepherds, huskies, collies, collie mixes, literally any spitz or herding dog basically. Especially spitzes, they're smart enough to see punishment for what it is and hate you for it.'

I’ve tried to reward her with treats, and she’ll stay by our side for the treat, but she’ll start pulling again as soon as we start moving. She’s also so strong and fast that she can pull an arm out of its socket

We plan to look into a reputable trainer sooner to get on top of this, but I’m curious how we could stop this from happening on our own? I bring high value treats with me, but going to my in-laws is more rewarding in her eyes in that moment.

She especially loves my mother-in-law, probably because she’s known her since she was a puppy. But when my mother-in-law decided to take my young nephew to the playground, my dog tried to pull after her instead of continuing to walk with me and my husband.

It’s incredible embarrassing because my in-laws don’t believe us that she can be a chill calm dog. They just see her as a crazy hyperactive dog that needs to be put on prozac.'

'puppy training is going better now ever since I expanded his area to more of the house so he has more room to wander, and also he got his shots so he can go outside for walks. So in general he is not as much of a menace

have been working hard to curb the biting the past few days and he is much better, he's pretty consistent with his down command when he starts to bite
it's make a fist, down, sometimes the fist opens to reveal a treat sometimes it's just praise. the fist is helpful to get his attention, once he looks at the fist he'll listen to the down

HOWEVER my dad is being a problem because for whatever reason he just refuses to get on the same page as the rest of the family. We are all doing the down thing but when he's getting his pants or feet nipped at he goes NO! STOP IT! KNOCK IT OFF, and starts dragging his leg away like he's playing tug of war, STOP IT OR YOU'RE GOING AWAY (because dogs speak english) THATS IT then he locks the dog in the crate
which is another problem because once again we're supposed to be on the same page with the crate is NOT to be used as punishment

I don't know how to get him to cooperate and I'm not sure why he's refusing to. He just wont play ball here'

Nope! All the "no no no" makes us feel good but dogs ignore it, and punishment they can't ignore is just abuse. I had a "rabbit reactive" husky on walks until today, where 2 days of anticipatory treat giving culminated in her walking past two of them - which is very good, considering she used to hunt them.

If treats aren't working because of "extortion" it's because you're re-acting to the behavior and not anticipating it starting. They do want to backtrack at first but keep the rewards up and they learn to ignore things.'

Any tips for that kinda training? I don't mind him hunting rabbits and such in the yard or field (providing its not rattler season) but when I'm on a walk in the neighborhood or he's trying to go after something dangerous like an elk I don't want the possibility of him slipping the harness or knocking me down on ice. He doesn't listen or care once he's seen the rabbit since in his mind food < hunting.'
